Coalition forces detain four Special Groups suspects in Wasit Province

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces captured four suspected Special Groups criminals in operations Thursday in Muwaffaqiyah, about 200 km southeast of Baghdad near Kut in Wasit Province.

Based on intelligence information, Coalition forces targeted an alleged Special Groups leader in Wasit Province. The suspect is believed to be tied to senior Special Groups leaders in that area who are responsible for weapons trafficking as well as attacks on Iraqi forces.

Coalition forces approached the suspect’s location where they detained four suspected Special Groups criminals without incident. According to Special Groups criminals already in custody, the organization receives funding, training, weapons and even direction from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard - Quds Force.

“The capture of these suspected Special Group criminals will further weaken those who attempt to destabilize the legitimate government of Iraq,” said COL Jerry O’Hara, MNF-I spokesman.

Iraqi, Coalition operations undermine al-Qaeda organization (Baghdad)
BAGHDAD – Coalition forces captured five wanted men and 13 of their alleged associates Wednesday and Thursday while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq in central and northern parts of the country.

Two operations in Bayji, about 160 km south of Mosul, struck the AQI foreign terrorist facilitation network, beginning with two suspects detained Wednesday. One is an alleged weapons dealer, also believed to help foreign terrorists move into and through Diyala province. Intelligence reports indicate many terrorist elements in Diyala have moved into the Tigris River Valley to avoid Iraqi and Coalition operations there.

A Thursday operation in Bayji netted four suspected terrorists, including a wanted man assessed to facilitate the movement of foreign terrorists locally. The wanted man is reportedly part of a bombing network there known for targeting Iraqi and Coalition forces.

In Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a man assessed to be an AQI cell leader in the Abu Ghraib area, about 25 km west of the city. The man, who was detained Thursday with four other suspects, has allegedly taken part in bombing attacks against Coalition forces.

An alleged well-established AQI leader with suspected ties to other extremist groups across Iraq was captured Thursday near Tarmiyah, about 40 km north of Baghdad. Coalition forces detained one additional suspect.

Using information from an operation June 30, Coalition forces northwest of Mosul captured a suspected longtime member of the AQI propaganda network Thursday. He reportedly stepped up to lead the group recently after it sustained significant leadership and membership losses in Coalition operations over the last several months.
