Anyone perpetrating this smear needs to be pounded down hard. We can’t do anything about DU or Kos but this is now threatening to spread to the mainstream. If it doesn’t show up on the six o’clock news it will at least be used as a whispering campaign.
Use the Obama campaign’s own intimidation tactics to fight this. Spread the word here, call editors, write letters, whenever you see it being repeated react quickly and angrily. point out that spreading this garbage damages the credibility of their publication.
Anyone who would use a four month old baby boy with Downs syndrome as a political weapon deserves nothing less than our full attention.
So far I’ve only seen this repeated in two places other than the kook blogs:
— Knoxville News Sentinel: http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/granju/2008/08/that-sarah-palin-rumor.html
The comments thread for the blog that has the claim seems to have been taken over by a conversation of Obama’s past associations. Good.
I used the “Contacts” page to send a polite complaining e-mail to the President and Editor of the News Sentinel.
— Alan Colmes had a post yesterday on his blog claiming that Trig’s Downs syndrome was caused by Governor Palin’s failure to get proper prenatal care. This posing (www.alan.com/2008/08/30/did-palin-take-proper-pre-natal-care/) has been pulled and you now get a big blue “404 - Not Found” message. I’d call this a victory.
It might be appropriate for someone to call Sean Hannity on Monday or Tuesday and inquire about Mr. Colmes’ posting.
Anyone perpetrating this smear needs to be pounded down hard.

Wrong. Let them spread it wide and far.
When your opponent is digging their own grave you don’t steal their shovel.

“My mother agrees with you
Lots of folks obviously disagreed with my decision to comment on the ol’ blog here about the Sarah Palin rumor.
And you are in excellent company: even my own mother left me a comment telling me she was in complete disagreement with my choice to blog on the topic.
. . .
And I listened to your feedback and decided that as is generally the case, mother knows best.”

I left a comment there telling her what a shameful blog post that was. And it was. And she is still clueless.
