George Clooney takes swipe at celebrity Barack Obama supporters

George Clooney has taken a sideways swipe at the celebrity Barack Obama supporters attending the Democratic Party convention.

While the likes of Charlize Theron, Susan Sarandon, Anne Hathaway and director Spike Lee have descended on Denver, Colorado, the politically-minded Clooney has stayed away.

The 47-year-old star is in Italy to present his latest movie, Burn After Reading, at the Venice Film Festival.

But asked if he would have liked to attend the convention, Clooney replied: “I like watching conventions on television. I think the stars there should be the people who have been elected.”

Nor did he go overboard in his praise for Obama, saying that he was “optimistic” but also “worried” about what the future might hold.

This despite the fact that the avowedly liberal Clooney is said to be a big supporter of the senator.

He was recently forced to deny acting as an unofficial adviser to the presidential hopeful.

Brad Pitt, Clooney’s co-star in the film, added that it was “a vital time” for US politics but was similarly reticent when asked about the Democratic candidate.

Perhaps the pair were wary about giving too much celebrity endorsement to the senator as he aims for the White House.

...last time around Hollywood hurt the Democrats...remember Michael Moore sitting with party big wigs at the convention?....this time the Dems are getting hip as to how much the public holds celebs in contempt....got a hunch they were told to stay at arms length away.

Nah, he still loves his Barack. He’s just saying this now because the Democrats FINALLY realized that Hollywood endorsements hurt rather than help; hence why they canceled Sprinstein and so on.

We were worried about George, while the family sat around wondering if we would eat yesterday's SPAM - or open a new can.

Umm, Bruce Springsteen doesn’t live in Hollywood. He lives in Rumson, NJ. Just sayin’....

“I like watching conventions on television. I think the stars there should be the people who have been elected.”

Translated: “I couldn’t get enough votes at my precinct caucus.”

So a few celebrities have grown a bit wiser it would seem.

Madonna and Spike Lee have certainly done no favors.
