Romney's Veep Audition
Time ^ | August 26, 2008 | Michael Scherer

Posted on 08/26/2008 9:21:25 PM PDT by Plutarch

Well-rested with his typically impeccable coif, Mitt Romney is back on center stage. Fresh from a ten-day vacation at the Beijing Olympics, the former Massachusetts governor barreled through Denver Tuesday, crashing the Democratic convention with a barbed audition for his possible spot on the McCain ticket.

Over several meetings with reporters, and hits on the cable news channels, Romney demonstrated his ability to deliver John McCain's message in a more concise and comprehensive way than any other McCain surrogate. In interview after interview, Romney was relentlessly negative, without ever raising his voice or coming across as strident. He hammered Barack Obama as an inexperienced "celebrity" and repeatedly cited the less fortuitous foreign policy positions of his running mate, Joe Biden.

"You have in the two people running for president, interestingly, two people who represent very different views of how to solve the challenges we face," he said at one of his first stops, a lunchtime meeting with the press, organized by the Christian Science Monitor. "On one side, with Barack Obama, you have an individual who I believe is a very charming and charismatic celebrity and senator, a nominee for the Democratic position to become president."

But that was just the set up. Romney said little else about the Democrats that could be considered even remotely complimentary. On taxes, he said Obama was considering increases for corporations, individuals, capital gains, and social security. He accused Obama of wanting to "restrict trade," by unilaterally renegotiating the North Ameircan Free Trade agreement. On energy, he hit Obama for not pushing harder to expand nuclear energy and opposing offshore drilling. In a new line of attack, he accused both Obama and Biden of being lifelong politicians, compared to McCain, who entered politics in his mid-40s...

I liked the way you used the dial charts to refute the baseless charge that McCain ate Romney’s lunch. As Mitt might say: “Facts are stubborn things.”

The funny thing is that his religion is not an issue except for the fact that it has led his family to miss military service in every war since the Mexican American (over 150 years!), not exactly a stellar resume for a guy who wants to be CIC.

If it is true his family has not served in the military then it has nothing to do with them being Mormons. Mormons are very patriotic, and many of their young men join the military every year.

Sounds like your are an intolerant bigot

Sounds like I was right, and you're a liberal. They're the only ones I've heard cast those kinds of aspersions at conservatives with no proof.

By you own words “Sounds like I was right, and you’re a liberal. They’re the only ones I’ve heard cast those kinds of aspersions at conservatives with no proof.”

So you are a liberal since you cast aspersions on another conservative. My comment is that you are intolerant bigot on any other view than your own. Your proof that I am liberal is I said I supported the McCain and his VP whomever that person is. But without proof you proclaim everyone else is a liberal.

I am done talking to someone who logic and reason mean nothing.

It is quite logical to say that if you’re supporting a liberal, you are de facto, in every way that matters, in a practical sense, a liberal.

If you help bank robbers rob banks, you’re a bank robber, no matter how often your lips talk about law and order.

If you hand the arsonist fire and fuel to burn down a house, you’re an arsonist.

What is quite illogical, actually, is to say, “I’m a conservative” while giving your sacred franchise over to a man who despises and blatantly misuses conservatives and conservatism.

In fact, it is quite logical to say that to hand another hammer to the man who has been bashing you in the head with hammers for ten years is INSANE.

Wow. Y'all just don't get it. Mitt's flip-flopping on abortion means that he must explain the change in his public position. That puts him on the defensive. Indeed, Mitt must explain multiple flips: gun rights, gay rights, socialized medicine. This will limit his traction in an attack dog role, make him vulnerable to being attacked, and will "win" him the Slick Willie image of someone who will say anything to get elected. This will remove crucial base voters from McCain's total, rendering Mitt a net political liability.

In the 2008 primaries, I railed against RINO Rudy and threatened to stay home if he won the presidential nomination. If you think Mitt had it tough in the primaries, just wait until the Obama-Soros machine gets their hands on him.

My point here is that those of us for whom social issues are of paramount importance will not tolerate an unreliable nominee. If the party has turned away from its base on social issues, it does not deserve our votes. The VP should not have to explain away his "former" liberalism--he should never have been liberal in the first place.

I have voted Republican in every presidential race since being old enough to vote, circa Ronald Reagan. With the high likelihood of a one term (or shorter) McCain presidency, this time the VP is crucial. This is the first vote in the 2012 R primary. I won't cast that vote for anything but a consistent, reliable, social conservative.

Your tagline: If the VP is Romney or another RINO, I'm staying home!

Anyone who chooses not to vote forfeits his right to say anything about the election results, IMO.

Putting principle in secondary place won’t get us anywhere.

Again, conservatism in principle involves stemming the tide of progressivism to the degree available.

This year, stemming the tide of progressivism residing within the candidacy of the most liberal presidential candidate in America's history necessarily involves voting for the Republican candidate, who is less progressive than the Democrat.

The principle resides within the desire to hold back the floodgates of an American political party increasingly steeped in Marxism.

Those who refuse to vote Republican this year are neither principally nor pragmatically conservative. Such people are refusing to stem the tide and are enabling a group of Fascists.

Disclaimer: I will vote for McCain even if he picks a pro-choice veep...but I will not even suggest that anyone else should do so. I respect and understand that line in the sand. If McCain does this, he will have ensured his own defeat. He will deserve to lose.

Romney would do well against Joe in the debate.

Mitt should eat Joe's lunch considering how polished he is with a very sharp mind. Mitt is really fast on his feet.

As long as the GOP moves leftward along with the rodents, WE as Conservatives get nothing and this country slips further down into the abyss. You’re preaching for a Pyrhhic victory.

You are entitled to your opinion. Actually, I feel well qualified to speak of CA's Gov. Arnold, even though I left governor blank on the '06 ballot (but voted straight ticket R from Lt. Gov. on down). Considering how he has governed the last couple years, I am very proud to have done so.

For now, I am only threatening to leave the presidential box blank (or vote 3rd party) on my ballot. I absolutely promise to do so, however, if McCain picks a RINO like Romney for VP. McCain must earn my vote by selecting a conservative VP.
