Things are supposed to be looking rosy for Democrats this November. But in case Barack Obama loses the Presidency, an excuse is all ready to go: America's too racist to elect a black man.
This narrative has gained traction with the Democratic Presidential candidate's recent setbacks in the polls. We hear it from the convention crowd in Denver and liberals in the press. The older, poorer, white, often Hillary voter who sounds ambivalent about the Obama coronation is an enticing scapegoat.
...There are Americans who judge politicians by their race, or gender, or religion; Mr. Obama will certainly carry the black vote in November because he is black and because he is a Democrat. But we reckon that a scant number of voters are motivated by racism, and that number's growing smaller by the day. Virginia elected a black Governor two decades ago, and Illinois has had two black Senators. America has had two black Secretaries of State, and major corporations are run by black CEOs. No other Western democracy has done as well at opening up political, business and other arenas to minorities.
Mr. Obama's descent from his Icarusian heights earlier this spring reflects a shift in this race that has nothing to do with race. A skin-deep Obamamania had energized the country. Now that's giving way to serious consideration of credentials and policy substance.
As a matter of sober fact, many Americans look at the junior Senator from Illinois and worry, as his Democratic Vice Presidential candidate pointed out last year, that he isn't "ready" for the job. Does this mean that anyone who agrees with Joe Biden's previous assessment is a racist? Do Democrats really think so little of their fellow Americans?

Some Democrats will not vote for a black candidate.
Therefore, if Obama loses, it will be because of racist Republicans.
I'll bet my next paycheck that if you ask a number of blacks if they will support a black Republican, 90% will say not just no, but h*** no.
Race became an issue only when the dems started it. If the dems could find someone that is not a racial demagogue, this may go away, but nominating someone who for 20 years, apparently approvingly, heard rantings of what a racist country this is will not allow it.
I’d vote for Thomas Sowell in a minute!
They sit around the beach all day, do a little surfing now and then, and scrounge around for the odd coconut that fell from a tree. And when the must work, they do a little day labor in the sugar cane fields for coconut juice money. And what's up with the flowers around the neck thing anyway?
Nope, never can trust a ... 'Hawaiian'. Hard work just ain't in them.
--Yes, and not just politicians but everyone. They are called "Democrats".
Well, because any conservative can’t be a true “black” person, by leftist definition,
your support of Condi doesn’t count in not making you racist.
According to definition, if your skin is light, you are born a racist.
Well...okay...two things: The Republicans' genius for snatching Defeat from the jaws of Victory is the second.
Those opposed to Obama have made it clear that race has nothing to do with their opposition,
And those who support him do so for three reasons: (1) he is black; (2) he is a Democrat; and (3) he is a Marxist and/or is in favor of Big Government (which many do not realize is the same thing; see tagline).
I think most Americans would LOVE to elect someone of African extraction to the Presidency. It fits beautifully into their cherished mythology--The American Dream--liberty, justice, equality for all--rags to riches--Horatio Alger--"beauty can come from anywhere when it is free to come"--in America, anybody can make it--etc.--et al.
Obama is a serious candidate ONLY BECAUSE OF his African origins.
We have to make absolutely sure that the 'Wright' episode in Obama’s life and campaign are NOT shoved under the carpet, because this episode and Obama's approach to dealing with it are positively telling about the candidate and the man.
My own feeling is the many racist, white Dems I know will probably overcome their biases and vote for Obama. Because they want something from the taxpayers, and Obama will certainly try to get it for them. But I would like to be a fly on the wall in the voting booths.
My position too. Also if he were six inches shorter or had a horrible speaking voice. He's all style and no substance. Except for a very red-Marxist interior.
