Are you under the impression that abominations like this only began happening recently? This kind of thing has been happening for thousands of years across multiple civilizations. Self-absorbed perverts aren’t a recent development.

You nailed the core of it, but I’ll address one of the methods of implementation -
perhaps the socially inculcated attitude of “they’re just evolved apes, nothing more” could have something to do with the devaluing of human life?
