Anyone out there know what to make of what the hell the Russians are doing? They seem to be in some type of self destruct mode. Don't they realize that their future is with the West? What alternatives do they have? Don't they see China to the east and the Muslim countries to the south as more of a threat. They cannot be so stupid as to think the western countries are a threat. Is Putin simply trying to consolidate his power. What's up?

Well, thats not good. What's is not good, is the waffling from NATO. They were supposed to kick Russia out during their last meeting and did not do it.
Russia then sees the opening to own the day and withdraw. Russia gets the points, the win and moves on to the final.
NATO is still spinning it's wheels. It has not made the moves to win the race, and may not make it to the final which would be a Russian win by default.

Yes it does, the geopolitical scene is moving very quickly. I would expect some announced punitive alliances from Russia in the near future as well.
The severity of their reaction tells me they are NOT happy about not acheiving initial goals (replacing the government) in Georgia.
I expect a flash point in the near future will be Crimea.

Everyone stop for a minute and rethink the reasons we went into Iraq. Did we do it in order to bust up a secret relationship with Russia? Hummm.....

What does the bully say when someone threatens to tell the teacher? “Go ahead.”
The Russians know meaningless action when the see it, and more so, they intend that everyone watching fully appreciates just how meaningless it is. They have done this in classic style by casting away what we threaten to withhold.

Bingo!
And you might throw in Iran.
And you might throw in some sort of oil-producing nation alliance with the likes of Venezuela and Iran.
You might even see nukes in Venezuela.

Escalation...
1) Invade a break-away province.
2) refuse to leave.
3) lie about leaving.
4) sign “missile defense agreement” with former Russian satellite.
5) threaten “worse”
6) cut all “military ties”
future escalation:
7) refuse further to leave
8) “bump into a ship” or some other afront.
9) cause a shooting incident
10) escalate to declaration of war OR
10) Preemptive nuclear strike to prevent the US from doing one...
/sigh

Tally up the medals of the former soviet states and vassal states and it is not so unimpressive. But of course the Russians no longer get bragging rights.

The Russian’s are behaving very strangely. Is their behavior an attempt to save face, or do they actually think Poland and the United States will just roll over? Strange.

He may be dissapointed. For the first time, Mac took a
5 point lead over The One in the latest Al Reuters/Zogby poll. The worm is turning, and he's packing an Uzi.

But they don’t belong to NATO, What military ties are they speaking about?
Besides, who shives a ghit, they like to hear themselves talk. Trying to bring back the “glory days” of the old USSR. Ahh yes, the good old days, failed 5 year plans, stores empty of goods the people wanted, unless of course you looked in a hard currency store but that’s right, Russian citizens weren’t allowed to buy anyhting there because the Russians didn’t want to take their own money in trade.

IMO, Putin is aligning himself with Iran for the up and coming world showdown (smackdown).

Will Russia form an alliance with Iran? Maybe the question ought to be- will they strengthen their alliance with Iran?

They are not going to westernize. They gave that up a few years ago when Putin began to take control of the economy and media.
They have not suddenly become crazy, they are and have always been crazy.
Had we taken them out after Germany during WWII, all this would have been avoided, but a some point, in perhaps the near future, we will need to take care of long delayed business.
Diplomacy is only a means to exploit for them, and it's about time that we, and the rest of the West accept it, and deal with it.
N. Korea and Iran all already agitating in support, and very soon you will see the players emerge on the field.

I guess our space program will be on hold (since we pretty much rely on the Russian space system). Hmmmm.
Serves. Us. Right.
We'll limp along for a while with our 'white elephant' shuttle, but we will certainly pay the penalty for trying to 'get by on the cheap' under the guise of cooperation.
