Predicting a close election in November, former Bush Administration official and Ohio congressman Rob Portman called on Hoosiers to back Republican presidential candidate John McCain at rally Tuesday evening in Fishers.
Hes an authentic American hero and a common sense conservative, Portman told the partisan crowd.
Portman is on McCains short list of potential vice presidential running mates. A six-term congressman, he also served as the United States Trade Representative and most recently as President Bushs Director of the Office of Management and Budget, a post previously held by Gov. Mitch Daniels.

John Kerry knew he lost Ohio that night.
Well, if it is a woman, it would be obvious pandering as well. Whitman isn't even in electoral politics, nor has she ever been a government appointee at any level. The very idea of her being the VP nominee is preposterous from any other consideration than pandering to the female voters, who (regrettably) make up over 50% of the likely electorate.
Hes an authentic American hero and a common sense conservative,
Common sense conservative? Is that the new euphemism for RINO?
Sounds like Portman makes a lot of sense as a running mate and he would be welcomed by most conservatives. But the Dems would scream he was BUSH’s BUDGET DIRECTOR and this supposedly would be a negative. Too bad so many people think the president and federal government control the economy or business cycles.
We may not like it, but the federal government does in fact control the economy and business cycles to a significant extent, by things like monetary policy, tax policy, government spending and government regulation. That's been a fact since the New Deal and even before, though the government's control increases with time. The best we can hope for is that the government uses these powers wisely to keep things on as even a keel as possible. So far, the W presidency has a pretty good record on that compared to other administrations, which the MSM will never tell you.
No particular reason to think that the VP nominees will be "far more important" than they usually are - unless, of course, the president dies or becomes incapacitated in office.
The significance of VP candidates has been much overrated by media, to the point where there's a nationally televised debate between the two of them. The media uses this (and, to lesser extent, the presidential debates) merely to have a show that gets ratings. So the VP candidates are subject these days to more scrutiny than the job of VP usually warrants. Unless the VP candidate is particularly offensive, he/she has very little to do with the election outcome.
I agree about Whitman - I did think about that and it would be very unlikely. I don’t think the pandering is as obvious with a woman as say with black, although it is there. I think the only black person McCain would “get away” with would be Powell (if he comes to our side).
Actually I disagree. I think it is more important because if nothing else this is a very close race with a handful of swing states. And... Obama is very inexperienced. And... McCain’s age will obviously be taken into consideration.
that short list is pretty long. I never heard of this guy, should be a good fit for pawpaw.
don’t you mean Mccain’s liberalism will be taken into consideration? I was scanning thru some channels a week ago stopped on cnn, I think they were interviewing people at the Iowa state fair, the reported said many of the people are finding little difference between the candidates.....ah the proles see it too.
It's difficult to say if this race will remain close up through Election Day. Reagan vs. Carter in '80 was close at this stage of the game, but Reagan pulled away decisively down the stretch. And Bush 41 - his running mate - had very little to do with it.

Hamilton County GOP Chairman, Alex M. Triantafilou, posted on his blog yesterday that John McCain is looking to have a big event with a big crowd in Ohio. Chairman Triantafilou writes:
Senator McCain is expected to host a rally on August 29 in Dayton and is looking for a BIG venue and for a BIG crowd. Hell get it. This is not yet public. I guess I just made it so.
According to Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic.com, this line entry is now deleted. Did Chairman Triantafilou drop the ball?
AllahPundit at Hot Air is speculating that McCain could name Rob Portman or John Kasich as the Vice-Presidential pick. Or, McCain could just be announcing his VP choice in Ohio because it will be a swing state in 2008, just as it was in 2004.
Also, August 29 is John McCains birthday.
“Portman would be great.”
Yep, he’s pro-family and has an 89% ACU rating.
