TBILISI, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Georgia's Interior Ministry said on Saturday that Russian troops had blown up a railway bridge about 45 km (30 miles) from the Georgian capital Tbilisi.

Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said troops had destroyed the bridge in the Kaspi region west of Tbilisi, "paralysing the Georgian railway network". Reuters could not independently verify the report.

A Reuters correspondent saw Russian armoured personnel carriers and soldiers advance to the area on Friday from the Russian-occupied town of Gori near breakaway South Ossetia.

Thanks Russia. Can we send you the bill?

Wow, now for all the people who still claim Russia was just protecting the South Ossetians, please tell what purpose this served?

What do you mean? The news told me this morning that this was all over! The Russians signed a cease fire and are gonna move on out!

That was sarcasm.

Georgia is not part of NATO. Pres. Bush put Georgia’s name up for election into NATO this year, but Germany wanted it tabled until next year..We see the result. That’s the reason she didn’t go to NATO.

Is that where President Bush made his speech? That is breathtakingly beautiful. I’d hate to see what it looks like now.

The Russians are great at breaking spirit and destroying symbols so break moral.

I’m still trying to put my mind around all this and how the world not only failed Georgia, but itself. To allow Russia to remain on a rampage across this country while brokering a piece of paper...

I am probably overreacting, but I am really grieved by the events of the past week. Not only the betrayal of Russia, and what that means from here on out in this world, but of the leaders of the world and their (non) reaction.

[Only in your eyes. You are under the assumption that Russian was seeking to join up with Iran in some sort of land route theory. Literally in your eyes the sky was falling and the Evil Soviet Empire was on the march again. Next in your eyes was Ukraine and any other state that took their fancy!]

In your eyes it may be that Russia is just protecting themselves from the evil, non assault into their national boundries.
The democrat eyes and communist eyes see so much alike.

I was struck by the beauty in the picture. And the lighting. That is a very good photo. Apparently a lot of refugees from Gori are in Tbilisi. They are living in the government buildings. I would imagine the place now looks a mess and is full of people. If the Russians were to attack the city from a southern front opened from the southwest while simultaneously attacking through the river gorges, there would be no escape for the refugees. In 1921, the Russians just attacked from the south, so the Georgian forces and refugees were able to at least temporarily escape through the northern river gorges. They do not have that option now. If the Russians move on this city it will be a monumental catastrophe. I have got to run. Hopefully we are wrong about Russia and they finally have decided to enter the civilized world.

she still could have gone to NATO to appeal for the inclusion of Georgia and Ukraine now..also to appeal to NATO to put pressure on the Russians because Russia does not have the veto effect it has in the security council in the UN> that was my point.

The Russians will remain in place until whatever force is agreed upon takes up positions to secure buffer zones as agreed upon. Russia doesn’t need Georgia. Russia needs/wants Abkhazia and South Ossetia but also to demonstrate to Georgia who is boss.

Last night a large armor group was seen going toward Senaki. Where are they now ? I heard they were heading toward Kutaisi.

Last reports I heard were that they had stoped at a village just east of Senaki.

Wrong. Russia NEEDS Georgia so we can’t have a base in that area and to move into other areas, Ukraine, Armenia, etc. Plus that pipeline WILL become important to Russia.

Armenia is already pro-Russian. Abkhazia is bordering on the Black Sea. What are they missing?

Karaleti is 8km from Gori.

Here's a good interactive map.
