The use of units comprised of ethnic Chechens to do much of the very dirty work in Georgia.
The nickname [Shrek] given by his comrades to the bald, pug-eared soldier was the only moment of light relief during a day of tense drama in which The Times witnessed Russia breaching the ceasefire agreement over South Ossetia at will.At a checkpoint set up by the Russian Army on the approach to the city of Gori from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, an armoured personnel carrier blocked the road and riflemen had fanned out in the surrounding bushes, their weapons trained on anyone who approached.
All were ethnic Chechens, whose reputation for pitiless brutality in war made them feared throughout the Caucasus.
The last sentence is an understatement.

But they are safe where they are now and could stay hidden.
What they have been saying were all lies. A search and destroy is just that. They should be about finished, they got most all of Georgia's military gear, guns, ammo, and they sunk all the boats they could get. They destroyed communications, and military infrastructure. The last thing was to drive up to the capital and demand the commander in chief.
Total search and destroy, 99% accomplished.
But I still think they would be better off staying where they are until the US military can go get them. And it won't be long at all now.
Russia needs that for cash. Not much more.
because in general the chechens like the georgians and hate the russians.
"Since the worsening of the conflict between Russia and Georgia, and especially after the beginning of armed aggression of Russia against Georgia, the Russian authorities and the media have widely replicated reports that "Chechen units and volunteers from Chechnya" are participating on Russian side in war against Georgia.
In this regard Wekalat (Head Office) of the Caucasus Emirate officially notify that few in number gangs of apostate-mercenaries of ethnic Chechens or representatives of other nationalities of the Caucasus, who consisting of Russian troops, are members of Russian occupation forces, and have nothing to do with the Armed Forces of the Caucasus Emirate and they are the enemies of the Caucasus Emirate like Russian invaders.
Wakil (Head) of the Caucasus Emirate, Shamsuddin Batukaev
now we see the reality of Russia lead by Putin. He is a devil who used to be a man. I hope NATO launches a full scale offensive to drive the Russians out of Georgia.
“they were afraid of being associated with the evil militia.”
They had good reason to be afraid because the Allies made this association and tens and tens of thousands of the Wermacht were slaughtered wholesale during the Allied Offensive in Europe without mercy. Nearly the entire German Third Army was wiped out by relentless P-47 Thunderbolt fighter attacks at the Falaise Gap near Normandy during Operation GrandSlam.
It’s just SVD/Dragonuv type rifle with the sling pulled tight against the side, makes it look wierd.
Putin was always a devil. He’s a former KGB agent and he probably had his first taste for blood in East Germany back in the ‘80s when he was stationed there.
Hmm interesting point of view there. I know that the Balkans’ a complicated mess so is the unrest there due to ethnic strife or a clash of different religions (Islam vs. Christianity)?
The Russians always love to probe for any weakness they may find.
chechens have been in south ossetia for some time now, I believe

Fingers pointed in kidnapping of Georgian boy Geno Petriashvili, the eleven-year-old boy kidnapped in South Ossetia three months ago, was freed unhurt on 25 November. Since then, the government of the breakaway republic and officials in Tbilisi have been trading accusations about his abduction.
From The Messenger:
Separatist authorities in South Ossetia claim their law enforcers succeeded in freeing the boy, Genadi Petriashvili, and returning him to his family.
In Tbilisi the Georgian Minister of Internal Affairs Vano Merabishvili countered that the release was simply staged by official Tskhinvali.
Shortly after the release, the ministry went on to condemn the separatist government as a criminal empire and published a flowchart implicating its leadership as well as the head of Russian peacekeepers in the region in criminal activity.
The South Ossetian and Georgian authorities differ on many aspects of the case, including where the boy was held hostage. The Head of the de facto South Ossetian Press and Information Committee Irina Gagloeva said that the boy was being held in a Georgian village in the conflict zone. Minister Merabishvili as well as the boy himself say he was held captive in the Java region of South Ossetia.
Gagloeva reported the leader of de facto republic of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoiti led the rescue operation himself. She added the boy has already testified to South Ossetian law enforcers.
Georgian authorities, however, claim that a criminal group with links to South Ossetian authorities as well as to Russian peacekeeping forces abducted Petriashvili.
"Kokoiti [Eduard Kokoiti, the self-proclaimed president of South Ossetia] perfectly knew from the first day who kidnapped Petriashvili," Merabishvili said on Friday. He claimed that the kidnappers had negotiations with Ossetian authorities and then together staged the release operation.
Kidnapping has long been a problem in the South Ossetian conflict zone. Eleven-year old Petriashvili told journalists he was kept in a pit for some of the time with his arms bound. The boy could not identify the names or origin of his kidnappers, but said that his capturers spoke Georgian and Russian."
And anyone who knows chechens know they traditionally keep their hostage victims in a pit in the ground.
So it is worse, because the chechens who are running around are rogue chechens, not connected to the Shamil family.
When I was in Georgia in the mountains there were chechens there who simply hated the Russians.
These chechens in this report, must be either from Russia or just plain hired for money.
Deja Vu all over again.
First you have to realise that South Ossetia itself is a gangster haven, set up for Russian criminals to go and launder money, have prostitutes, etc.
So it has attracted the worst of society in Russia,
and it is in fact run by a former soviet wrestler who is complete scum.
It is no suprise that chechens have drifted in, and perhaps stayed.
That explains it. Hired thugs.
