Russia Deployed Chechen Units Into Georgia

The use of units comprised of ethnic Chechens to do much of the very dirty work in Georgia.

The nickname [‘Shrek’] given by his comrades to the bald, pug-eared soldier was the only moment of light relief during a day of tense drama in which The Times witnessed Russia breaching the ceasefire agreement over South Ossetia at will.

At a checkpoint set up by the Russian Army on the approach to the city of Gori from the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, an armoured personnel carrier blocked the road and riflemen had fanned out in the surrounding bushes, their weapons trained on anyone who approached.

All were ethnic Chechens, whose reputation for pitiless brutality in war made them feared throughout the Caucasus.

The last sentence is an understatement.

"Chechen special forces were also involed in the conflict and are seen here attacking the Georgian village of Zemo Nikozi." - Sky News

Jovial Russians mount deep incursion into Georgia - 13 Aug 2008 - On a day of surreal irony, Mr Putin must also have taken satisfaction from the fact that Chechen troops from the Russian army's 42nd division led the push to Orsojani. Many of these men had fought against Mr Putin when he launched the Second Chechen War in 1999. The Chechens may have been battle hardened, but they were hardly organised. There was an air of chaos in this advance, just as there had been with the Georgian army's headlong retreat two days earlier.

Many of the soldiers in the advance seemed more interested in the western photographers hanging out of windows from cars that careered back and forth along the long, slow line the convoy took.

"Where are you going," the reporters shouted. "To see Saakasvili," one Chechen shouted.

Further towards the Ossetian frontier, two Russian armoured personnel carriers guarded a checkpoint manned by Chechen soldiers tasked with stopping traffic passing from Georgia's Black Sea ports to Tbilisi.

The Chechens, who were behind trees above the roads, lolled in the shade smoking cigarettes.

"You got any American cigarettes," one asked. "Russian ones are dreadful." From beyond them, smoke rose into the air from burning villages and bursts of automatic gunfire could be heard further down the road.

An old woman stumbled down the road, running painfully in the direction of Tbilisi, blood oozing from her eye.

"Chechens and South Ossetians are killing people in the villages," she shouted as she slowly hobbled into the distance.

Chechens, Cossacks, and the Confederation of Mountain Peoples of the Caucasus - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederation_of_Mountain_Peoples_of_the_Caucasus .

Russia is ethnically cleansing an area the size of Connecticut. The target is the 30,000 Georgians and Mingrelians in South Ossetia, and the 56,000 residents of Gori, plus the 15,000 or so residents of villages between the pre-August 8th Georgian line of control and Gori.

It is a Dragonov sniper rifle. The reason it looks strange is the sling.

It is in South Ossetia, so no doubt they felt quite bold.

Check it.

The magazine on those was always a dead giveaway during OPFOR weapons ID tests.

Putin has taken a page straight out of Hitler’s black book. In WWII, when the Wermacht invaded the Soviet Union, it was followed closely by Einsatzgruppen, a “militia” of thugs (many of whom were Lithuanian) whose role was to “cleanse” the area of locals after the army had moved on. Some of the most horrendous atrocities of the war were committed on innocent civilians by these Einsatzgruppen. It got so bad that many in the Wermacht were sickened by the actions of the Einsatzgruppen, and morale in the Wermacht began to suffer and they were afraid of being associated with the evil militia. Not a few German senior officers protested to Berlin, even going so far as threatening to have the troops open fire on the Einsatzgruppen if they were found near the troops.

I’d like to see them face a dozen Marine sniper teams armed with Accuracy International .338 Lapua magnums.

Well, by that time, we will be playing as well. I prefer to call this inning 1. in what could be a short game, or a long one.
