A member of China's Politburo asked for the last-minute change to match one girl's face with another's voice, the ceremony's chief music director, Chen Qigang, said in an interview with Beijing Radio.
"The audience will understand that it's in the national interest," Chen said in a video of the interview posted online Sunday night.

The real singer is beautiful and I’ll bet she has a beautiful heart as well.
Of course. But why on Earth should it matter how she 'looks' anyway? This sends a terrible message to young girls around the world.
“What kind of a message does this send to young girls around the world?”
Yeah...here in America we have skinny models, beauty pageants, homecoming queens, pretty Hollywood celebrities/rock stars on the cover of magazines, and beautiful, shapely, NFL cheerleaders clad in skimpy ourfits.
Geez, what is China thinking?
What about the little girl who was told she was not talented enough to have her voice heard? What kind of message does that send her? “We only care about your looks.”
IMHO, BOTH these children were abused.
Why does anyone find this surprising? The ‘ugly’ little girl should consider herself lucky, considering China’s one child policy made it a real possibility that she could have been aborted for the poor luck of having been a female. I don’t recall the exact ratio of men to women, but I know there is a big shortage of females in China for exactly that reason. And some find it shocking they would discriminate for looks, too?
A metaphor for the Mao Games in their entirety.
The decision came from the ChiCom government itself. I doubt very seriously if government officials here in the U.S. would ever think about doing such a thing.

*"Politburo is short for Political Bureau. The term originates from the Russian Politicheskoye Buro, which contracts to Politburo. A Politburo is the executive organization for a number of political parties, most notably for Communist Parties."

Of course they are. But "beauty" should have nothing to do with it. The first little girl is the one who actually sang the song, and she should get full credit for it. Instead they embarrass the daylights out of her and send a horrible message to millions of other young girls around the world.
You got that right!
Excellent point. And a very sad and disturbing one.
Good point!
Phoebe: “Well, I have a video. You have to pay attention. No this... this voice woman, she’s so talented, but according to the producer people, they said she doesn’t have, like, the right look or something. You know? I mean, it’s like, she’s like one of those animals at the pound who, like, nobody wants ‘cause they’re not pretty enough. Or you know, like... like some old dog who’s just kind of like, stinky and.... Uh! Oh my God, she’s Smelly Cat. Oh! Oh, that song has so many levels.”
The singer is entirely cute!!! PRECIOUS!!!
Something I read earlier had some Chi-Com official saying that the Chi-Com way gave BOTH girls some honor.
GACK!!!!!
Barbra Striesand are you listening to how your Commie pals really treat even little children? Where would you be if our country treated people that way - certainly not in front of the audience.

There it is.
I have a question: has anyone thought of a last-minute dental work for that poor girl? She is pretty as it is (looks my youngest daughter when she was her age), but if the ChiCom didn’t put her out there because of her buck teeth, they could have done something.
