On a planet 4C hotter, all we can prepare for is extinctionThere's no 'adaptation' to such steep warming. We must stop pandering to special interests, and try a new, post-Kyoto strategy We need to get prepared for four degrees of global warming, Bob Watson told the Guardian last week. At first sight this looks like wise counsel from the climate science adviser to Defra. But the idea that we could adapt to a 4C rise is absurd and dangerous. Global warming on this scale would be a catastrophe that would mean, in the immortal words that Chief Seattle probably never spoke, "the end of living and the beginning of survival" for humankind. Or perhaps the beginning of our extinction.
The collapse of the polar ice caps would become inevitable, bringing long-term sea level rises of 70-80 metres. All the world's coastal plains would be lost, complete with ports, cities, transport and industrial infrastructure, and much of the world's most productive farmland. The world's geography would be transformed much as it was at the end of the last ice age, when sea levels rose by about 120 metres to create the Channel, the North Sea and Cardigan Bay out of dry land. Weather would become extreme and unpredictable, with more frequent and severe droughts, floods and hurricanes. The Earth's carrying capacity would be hugely reduced. Billions would undoubtedly die.

Do more research!
So called global warming stopped in 1998 and we have lost the the increase from the nineties.
Next on your list of scare tactics: NEW ICE AGE!
When will these Global Cooling deniers get a clue?
4C??? Glad we don’t use that silly metric system here in AMERICA!!! We’re safe!
Billions would undoubtedly die.
Hint: They are going to die anyway.
What would you call this, a pseudo quote, quasi quote?
Anyone see sarcasm? Anyone? Bueller?
Good point. Plus, I talk to people who just love there to be something *exciting* to worry about. They are often the same people who are really into conspiracy theories and such.
susie
Well, THAT will help my hot flashes!
It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature!
Besides, who would underwrite the liability insurance coverage for such a project? A little "oopsie" could really be a bad day for us all.
Regards,
GtG
PS I seem to recall a suggestion that we spread soot on the icecaps to encourage heating/melting. It seemed like a dumb idea to me 'cuz the icecaps are generally in the dark for six months at a time, and when the sun is up it barely clears the horizon.
Hey! They're actually doin us all a favor!!! I heard on the radio this morning about some poll that shows that people believe in GW, but are largely unconcerned about it. Probably because "of all the stupid, lame, attle-brained, idiotic writings!"
I recall that as well, and I find it intriguing (not) that the "answer" was the same back then, as it is today. Massive Socialism and strict government control over every facet of life.
Odd, isn't it?
the infowarrior
Maybe we should ask the government to step in and save us from climate change!
Bump for later.
Nope. I would put the new furnace on hold and go for the central air first...
I would plant a much wider variety of fruit trees...
I would grow more tomatoes...
... and maybe a small tobacco crop to horrify the neighbors--and then use it all to make bug spray the next year.
Wow! just think of the things I could grow if suddenly I lived in zone 4!
Including a formidable briar hedge to keep the migrating nits from lalaland out...
An Osage Orange hedge would work really, really well! Any migrating nits that somehow manage to git through that (which I seriously doubt), you can pitch them softball size “oranges” at ‘em. (they ain’t soft, by the way)(ouch!!!)
I’m familliar with the osage orange—and its hardness, from my youth...in a warmer clime.(8^D)
We must stop pandering to special interests, and try a new, post-Kyoto strategyYes. It's called Drill, Drill, Drill. And stop funding "research" that is really just cover fire for the global warming hoax.

4C increase - yeah right - -Just when we get the real deal that we've actually been on a documented cooling trend over the past decade.
