“Mess with a bear, get the belly”

LOL, that bear has been caged for almost 20 years. It just lashed out and pawed the bear tender’s young son. The cage is permanent.

hope Putin helps Bush with Iran and things work out for the best.

Are you kidding??? Things are at an impossible impasse in Iran because Russia has spent the last 4 years running interference for them. We've allowed them to thwart us at every turn.

Ukraine and Georgia will be in Nato within 3 years.

“Any US President that agrees to that should be immediately impeached. The US should NOT be treaty-bound to defend those countries...it’s not in US interests.”

Funny on several points:

1. It sounds like Obamanation speak...”impeach impeach” lol

2. You better impeach Bush since he supported this already

3. It is totally in our self-interest for a myriad of reasons: oil access, geostrategic, containment Russia, etc.

Exactly! From a US perspective this is the only thing that matters. Their NATO membership is dead in the water. The idea some folks have of using this as a pretext for a war with Russia is ridiculous.

Synopsis:

So. Ossetia didn't start out that way. In the beginning of Georgia's independent, the people of So. Ossetia were in on the "Solidarity" movement in liberation from Russia.

Some in So. Ossetia, however, still had fealty to Russia. Nonetheless, these were Georgians "now". An active nationalist front arose in So. Ossetia. Why? Georgia, trying to settle all its "ethnic" differences, declared Georgian the official language of Georgia. So. Ossetia felt "dissed". And began rebelling against their own government -- Georgia. So. Ossetia refused to vote in Georgian elections and began holding its own elections, with its own leaders.

Georgia passed a law banning "regional parties". So. Ossetia screams to Russia. Russia and Chirac (France) agree to issue passports to So. Ossetia.

This then provides So. Ossetia with "dual nationality". Illegal smuggling grows in So. Ossetia. brawls begin.

To the point the international "community" is called in. First call if for "peacekeepers". Then it is decided that instead of using "non-involved peacekeepers", the peacekeeping force between Georgia, So. Ossetia should be comprised of Georgia, So. Ossetian and Russian peacekeepers.

Obviously, the latter didn't work out very well. The Bear and So. Ossetian working hand in hand, also I quote in a clearly word cite by Putin, in conference with Chirac, in 2004 -- to regain the 8 independent states back to Russia.

If fingers are to be also pointed, I point my finger at the fraudulent So. Ossetia "government".

They went right along with the movement away from Russia, and then decided their "language/culture" should be given status. So. Ossetia does not constitute even 1/3 of the entire domain of Georgia.

So, no. I don't acknowledge So. Ossetia as: its own country, nor as having a legitimate form of government OUTSIDE OF THE Georgian government.

Russia has invaded a sovereign country, with complicity of So. Ossetia.

It's not a matter of whether anyone is capable of understanding: it should be more about what the facts are.

But you can help me understand something: Why didn't So. Ossetia move to declare itself "Russian" from the very beginning of Georgia's Independence?

And especially, since you say, the people of So. Ossetia look more like "northern" Ossetians?

And what do "looks" have to do with with a choice in government?

You suggest the risk of nuclear war with Russia over the Ukraine and Georgia?

Now you're the one who sounds ridiculous.

I can’t help but notice your posts sound like a Hezbollah spokesman’s.

The Russian government decimated the free press. Eliminated its political rivals. Extorts its neighbors via its energy policy. Sure, you can say “well, its all for the Motherland.” Fact is, the Russian ruling oligarchs have built their fortunes on the people’s backs like no Western leaders since monarchy reigned supreme. They’ve encouraged the rise of youth parties that resemble the Hitler youth. All in all, a ruling elite looking out for its own interest by encouraging a dangerously toxic brew of nationalism and oil wealth.

Your bragging about “not messing with the bear” is a perfect punctuation to this point. I was there. I saw what you did in the last 10 years.

It’s totally within EUROPE’S self-interest. Not ours. Take the money we spend on NATO and turn it towards nuclear coal-to-oil refinieries and the oil aspect of it disappears entirely.

Imagine the morally equivalent fodder for liberal lament: We were unilateral in Iraq, so we can’t say Russia can’t do the same to Georgia. (As if removing a genocidal dictator is the same as attacking a democracy).

Gah, I heard this crap from a whole bunch of people I know just the other day. Thing is, there's no point in even trying to retort with the parenthetical comment above. These are the type that see a picture of smiling Bush at the Olympics accidentally holding a flag backwards and think it's the funniest, most ridicule-worthy thing in the world. God, I hate liberals. These people would justify the rape and murder of their own mothers if if they could somehow work the word "George Bush" into their explanation.

“...speeding up Georgia into NATO.”

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Georgia gets its ass-kicked in four days, and other countries want to volunteer to defend it. Won’t happen.

“Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Georgia gets its ass-kicked in four days, and other countries want to volunteer to defend it. Won’t happen.”

So, by your logic, we should seek out only countries that don’t need protection from NATO to fend off Russian aggression. LOL Brilliant.

Give up the charade. You don’t have the American national interest at heart, you care about the Russian national interest. You have proven that with a multitude of “Mother Russia posts over the last few days.

“...stool for Russia.”

Sorry, my only concern is the US of A and its security. The US is not threatened by anything going on between Georgia and Russia.

That is why we have not and will not do anything.
That is also why we will not pledge to defend them through NATO.

That’s just the way it is.

South Ossetia has an autonomous government

A illegal and unrecognized government, I might add.

They are incapable of sustaining themselves, and are located in undisputed Georgian territory.

Now as yourself what this country, the U.S. of A would do if North Carolina seceded and formed a armed military camp in the Eastern corridor of the U.S.

Then add to it, the fact that shots emanating from this zone over a long period of time at Georgian authorities and civilian locations outside the zone were hitting the targets and causing great consternation in the Georgian civilian populace.

What would we do?

We would likely at some point with all diplomatic efforts failing, attempt to take control by sending in a armed force to do exactly that.

That's what they did, and it escalated into a unintended shooting war and there is no doubt in my mind who shot first.

This protected zone was created as the result of the first invasion in 1921 when Ossetians defected from Georgia, asked for Russian protection because they were considered to be Russian sympathizers, which they most certainly are.

So who is in the moral catbird seat here? Who has right on their side, and is merely defending their sovereign territorial rights, and accepted social responsibilities to the whole of the country in the form of public safety and national defense which all governments are responsible for?

I get it, but what I don;t get is why you would think Russia and S. Ossetia to be the victims when they are the instigators of the entire sordid mess going back to 1921 when my grandparents became refugees from the area as a result of Russian aggression and hegemony.
