It would have worked, except for one thing—

Russia intervened.

And rightly so my little drugies.

Pretty convenient that Russia had all those troops and tanks amassed and ready to go wasn't it???

You also failed to mention that the trigger for Georgia's action was the shelling of their villages by the Russian 'peacekeepers' and seperatists.

Yeah, that was real heroic, when he was cowering on the sidewalk with his bodyguards acting as humanshields.

They are not valiant by their actions in routing out civilians from Osestia.

They did not rout anyone, they attempted to regain control over a armed group of thugs directed by Russian handlers who set this all up as a trip wire to engage in what they have done. It's the same crap they pulled off in 1921. It worked then, so logic dictated that it would work again.

Thanks in no small part to those who buy into the ruse, they may yet succeed. I find this fact to be most worrisome. If it can happen with so many Americans, mostly leftist in nature, then populist agitprop can work world wide on a large stage.

Perhaps, that is why Obamma has so much support. Americans have apparently fallen into a state of decomposition. It could mean the end of the experiment at worst, and at best a huge lesson for the future.

Thank you for posting that news update.

Gori is the birthplace of Stalin.

And Gori still has Stalin's birthhome as a museum.

If Gori is indeed being bombed, this tells me Russia's concerns are not ideologic but economic. Elsewhere, I read this morning that Russian President Medvedev, in listing his immediate demands in exchange for a cease fire has said: "an end to Georgia’s NATO aspirations and Europe being cut off from the Caspian oil and gas reserves".

The latter suggests bombing the pipeline is being held like a hammer in the negotiations. That being said; should Russia bomb the pipeline, a pipeline which is serving many now, Russia further indebts itself on multiple levels.

350 tanks in theatre in 3 days. That’s not such a heavy feat. Besides, you know full well, both sides were preparing for something like this. Sort of makes you question the judgement of Georgia’s leadership. As far as Russian ‘peacekeepers’ starting the fight, who knows for sure? 30,000 refugees fled north—haven’t got figures on how many went south.

But this is all trivial, facts on the ground are the only thing relevant here. And what do those tell you?

Russia has really jumped the shark. In addition to everything else, they have damaged their relations with China badly

No kidding.

Wow, Cindy, Pravda is as disgusting as it was during the Soviet era. Pughtin and his KGB buddies really desire desperately to usher in the Neo-Soviet era.

Those territorial disputes you mentioned, are not the fault of Georgia, and they are powerless to change that dynamic. In order to do so, they would be required to beat Russia militarily.

Russia will never give up these issues because they need them to keeo Georgia destabilized.

NATO should now have a better understanding of what is going on here, and having this understanding, it can work around these issues.

Georgia is and has been prepared to make concessions, but you need to understand that no concession will be accepted by Russia because they only need the issue. They have real need for the land and especially no need for the people of these areas. They only need the diversion to keep Georgia from achieving national stability.

This has been this exact way since the 1921 invasion.

Effort will now be made to solve these issues and they will fail until Russia decides to abandon it's goals. (and we all should know what those are and have always been)

One can only hope or assume that once efforts fail and the Russians make their obstinacy obvious, that a workaround will be acceptable to all. To me, that will be enough, because the land in Assetia is too valuable and too close to the heart of Georgia and is a strategic position. The Muslim enclave in the West is really of no value to anyone and is a false excuse for any incursion. They can concede that, but like I said, the Russians could care less.

This all just a parlor game to them.

John McCain has said that he sees KGB in Putin's eyes. So are you calling Sen. McCain a liar also?

Also, resorting to personal attacks now. You must realize you are defending the indefensible.

Here is another angle to view this from, but unlikely you are capable.

South Ossetians are ethnic Slavs, or Russians. Ethnic Georgians are more Baltic in their heritage. Dark haired, dark-eyed, more akin to Turks, Azerbijanis, Armenians, etc.

South Ossetia has an autonomous government. Now, that by itself creates a quagmire. They are within the borders of Georgia, although they have their own government. Do you know how this government came into being? If so, enlighten everyone here. You seem to have all the facts, or think you do.

South Ossetians have ALWAYS or shall we say (for at least 80 years) had an alliance with Russia, because they are Slavic brothers and sisters with Russia, for one.

Now let's move over to "North" Ossetia. These people are also Russians/Slavs and consider themselves Russian, as does the government of Russia.

South Ossetians want the same relationship with Russia that North Ossetians already have. And like I said, South Ossetia has its own autonomous government. You or other have brought up crime and corruption, trouble eminating out of South Ossetia. Does this require a fleet of Georgian tanks? What happened to police? What happened to diplomatic contingencies? No, attack them with tanks. That's what happened.

As you see, the matter has no handy explanation or easy outcome. It is a genuine mess. Mistakes were made on both sides. This is a cultural battle as much as anything else. Russia is coming in to protect their own, as it were.

Their elected leadership is truly American trained and inspired, and truly democratic yet far from mature and perfect.

So are John Kerry, Algore, Edwards and Obama. Ask yourself, why did Geogians want an American trained lawyer for president. Answer is, same reason Americans are on the road to electing Obama.

Upshot is, too many people everywhere are the target of kook sponsored manipulation, and have become kooks themselves. Even here on FR , we're having an epidemic.

Why this stampede to act against our national interests in lionizing Georgia despite the facts. Georgians for ~200 years have been more Russian than Russia itself.

“calling McCain a liar?”

Nope. There is no KGB, it is different agency, name, and initials. I think Senator McCain was referring to Putin’s work history inside the KGB, not implying the agency actually exists now.

‘Gramps’ was not meant to give offense. Just pointing out that worrying about KGB, USSR, et. al. is a little old-fashioned.
