The Substitute Wife (1994) (TV)A dying wife and mother makes plans for her family in this made-for-television drama. Lea Thompson stars as Amy Hightower, a frontier wife and mother of four who is ill and expected to die. In an unusual move to make sure her family is cared for, she finds a prostitute named Pearl (Farrah Fawcett) and teaches her how to be a wife and mother. The movie shows how Pearl slowly transforms, Amy's health fluctuates, and how husband Martin (Peter Weller) deals with the unusual circumstances. Filmed in Texas, this film is at times humorous and emotional, and not typical movie-of-the week fare. ~ Bernadette McCallion, All Movie Guide
Yep, that’s exactly the kind of situation I envisioned - especially when she said that her diagnosis made things easier...
I know a man who’s wife was dying and she made him take dancing lessons with her so that when she died, he’d be able to go out and meet other women in the hopes that he would find someone else eventually. He did find someone at a Christian singles dance about 3-4 years later and they married within an additional year. How sweet of his first wife to love him so much.
I saw that movie! That was really good and I have teetered on my views on polygamy since then. Not that I’m all for it, but I understand how a woman who knows she is dying would want to cultivate a relationship between someone she likes and respects with her husband and children.
So sad though.
