Your assuming that Russia would bring everything down South. That just doesn’t happen in war. Sometimes outnumbering your opponent backfires as your army is to big to maneuver.

Well, the Russians were selling the Iraqis near-front-line MiGs and such running up to Desert Storm; long term operators such as the Indians tell us that their chaff and jammers haven’t gotten any better and they certainly haven’t done anything about the radar/IR signatures of those big titanium slabs the Russians call airplanes.

“This is the moment of truth for everybody, for President Bush, for the United States, for the rest of western world”

I hate to see a Presidential candidate get a boost in this way - but during a War of this potential magnitude, Americans will seek the candidate who has more experience in World affairs, and that obviously is McCain. In fact I bet if you look at the DU right now the conspiracy nuts are at it all ready.

"Bush and Pootie probably discussed this weeks ago and have a deal. We get (tepid) support on Iran sanctions and they get whatever the H311 they want in the Caucuses."

Possible, but not probable.

Iran sanctions mean absolutly nothing, and no one, with the exception of the Israelies, will do anything to stop Iran. And then only as a last ditch measure when they are convinced it's now or never.

Good thing the the Ruski's took the "wall" down and disolved the union.

Georgia is not yet member of NATO. They were going to join soon with the Ukraine.

Georgia is NOT a member of NATO. They want to be but it has not come to that point...... still, they are western-oriented and have deployed a brigade in Iraq...... it will be ‘interesting’ to see whether they get support from the US or Europe. Turkey is probably the most likely source of support, due to proximity and also Turkish-Russian regional rivalry, history, and enmity. Don’t expect any NATO official involvement......

CNN: 15 Russians killed in fighting

I'm guessing that these are Russian troops, and not the "citizens" Russia is claiming it went in to protect. If so, this thing is moving faster than it seemed only a couple of hours ago. BTW, it's now the 3rd story at ABC, behind the Texas bus crash and, of course, the Olympics.

I’m using that as an example. If they flew the strike using the current Super Hornet, the range is even less. I just happen to be more familiar with the A-6 stats off the top of my head.

A quick trip to Google shows that the Super Hornet’s unrefuelled range in surface strike config is only 449 miles.

“Georgia is a Member of NATO.
Very interesting. This scenario fits right into NATO’s charter doesn't it? “

Yes, and you can bet the lights were burning all night in the Whitehouse Situation Room.

We are out of this one.

Ukraine is the real question. They could probably take Russia in a fight.

I’m not assuming Russia needs to bring anywhere near ‘everything’ — just saying that Georgia’s Air Force appears to lack numbers or first-rate air superiority fighters, so how long would they last if Russia is serious?

capital of the breakaway republic ossetia, not the capital of georgia. Russians are going to “protect” ethnic russians and their peacekeepers, not to retake georgia. Ossetia has a russian side and a georgian side. My bet is that after this kerfluffle ossetia will be all on the russian side and georgie will just whine about it.

Either Stingers or newbie Russian pilots got low enough for the ZSUs to get them.

Within their effective range and with a good crew, a ZSU is hell on wheels against aircraft and even against vehicles.
