(dpa) - Senator John McCain, 71, heads to the unlikely town of Sturgis, South Dakota, on Monday to rub elbows with the rowdy tattooed rebels of the American roads at a campground rock concert.
With a population of 780,000, South Dakota on the Great Plains is hardly an election-day prize for either McCain's Republican Party or rival Democrats.
But the state doubles in population during the annual August motorcycle rally in Sturgis, at the foot of the Black Hills, that draws an estimated 500,000 to 600,000 out-of-state "wild hogs" who roar cross country to celebrate their bike culture.
McCain plans to maximize on the crowds by providing the opening act at an annual concert that honours American military veterans at the Buffalo Chip campground, his campaign said Sunday.
McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, will warm up the crowd for performances by American Idol country music singer Kelly Pickler and the mercurial Kid Rock, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader newspaper online.
The annual motorcycle rally - from August 4-10 this year - is one of the country's largest, with a reputation for notorious and outrageous behaviour.
A novelty draw to the Buffalo Chip campground this year will be a firing range for cyclists to try out automatic rifles, including vintage World War I machine guns, camp owner Rod Woodruff told the Argus Leader.
It was not known if McCain would take a turn at the firing range - or if he would draw a crowd as large as the 200,000 who flocked to hear Democratic presumptive nominee Barack Obama in Berlin recently.
Can you imagine Obama wading into a huge crowd of bikers with SS in tow? Can you imagine that McCain will have any concern at all?
How will he start his talk?
“Any of you all been to Berlin?”
“Hope you all got your tires inflated?”
“We’re all here to save the planet”
Any other suggestions?
Sorry. Couldn't resist. :-P
Yes. I know plenty of bikers who ride to Sturgis. I also know plenty who don't.
Now if McCain would take part in the shooting that would be really cool.
The fact he is going to sturgis which is attended by people of all walks of life from across the USA is a smart move.
It also keeps Obama in the nanny state category.
Bicycle helmet..check...tire reflecter..check...homie in car with windows down...check.
Obama on a fatboy, well, you decide.
FTW.
Note to MSM
McCain attends biker rally where MOST MOTORCYCLISTS VOTE.
Obama attends a German rally which has to have people bribed with a rock show and the GERMANS DON’T VOTE!
This is going to be a COOL MOVE.
SOMEBODY TAKE PICTURES FOR POSTING HERE!!!!!
WE NEED TO BYPASS THE DINOSAUR MEDIA CENSORS!
Rat bikes will have a presence.
Screw the “wannabes.”
“McCain attends biker rally where MOST MOTORCYCLISTS VOTE.” .... conservative
Bet he would do well in the wienie bite contest
I don’t know what’s wrong with McCain’s arms/shoulders, but personally, it doesn’t look to me like he’d be able to shoulder a rifle and fire it without some kind of complication.
Prediction:
Somehow the MSM will turn this into McCain playing the race card.
I am sure the media will play it down, “not as many people attended this year due to higher gas prices, the fault of the Republicans, blah blah...”
Nope, you name the profession, it will probably be represented at Sturgis.
Well, maybe excepting the liberal professions, like diversity coordinator or some such.
That's because there are local laws against showing twits.
The Obama campaign will now need to take action:
Inside a Obama campaign strategy meeting, a lean 23 year old staffer who is sipping his wheat juice drink, speaks:
“That darn McCain; he one upped us again with his appearance to those bikers out in flyover country.”
Obama campaign staffer is thinking, thinking; and then shouts “I've got it!! We will go to Sturgis also, I have the perfect plan. We said earlier that proper tire inflation is important. Right?? Well what is at Sturgis????Right. Tires, and lots of them. We will print the Obama logo on 400,000 tire pressure gages and hand them out to those biker people, along with bottles of organic tea”
