Multi-National Corps – Iraq

BALAD, Iraq – The Hillah Special Weapons and Tactics team detained a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq member Aug.1 in the Diyala province, 87 kilometers northeast of Baghdad.

The suspect is allegedly part of a cell responsible for ethnic violence, kidnapping and improvised explosive device attacks. Reports indicate AQI, which uses Diyala province as a safe haven, needs to maintain a foothold in the area to remain a prominent force in the Diyala River Valley.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq loses operatives, support

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces detained 15 suspected terrorists during operations Saturday and Sunday targeting al-Qaeda operatives in central and northern Iraq.

In Baghdad, Coalition forces captured a wanted man who is reportedly responsible for establishing a foreign terrorist facilitation hub in the city. Two additional suspects were detained.

In Bayji, about 160 kilometers south of Mosul, Coalition forces captured a man believed to manage finances and logistics for AQI cells in the Hamrin Mountains region. They detained an additional suspected terrorist during the operation.

Coalition forces searched Bir Qassim, a village near the Syrian border in northwest Iraq that intelligence reports indicate is the location of AQI foreign terrorist facilitation operations. During the sweep targeting AQI facilitators and terrorist hideouts, Coalition forces detained 10 suspected terrorists.

“Coalition forces continue to pressure al-Qaeda in Iraq, disrupting their networks and blocking the entry of foreign fighters,” said Navy Lt. David Russell, MNF-I spokesman.
