Multi-National Corps – Iraq PAO

BALAD, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces detained two suspected Special Groups criminal leaders and another in separate operations in central Iraq Aug. 1.

Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained two suspected Special Groups criminal leaders in Qurna, southeast of Baghdad. The two suspects allegedly lead one of the most effective Special Groups cells in Qurna. One is said to be responsible for improvised explosive device emplacement, assassination and indirect fire attacks on Iraqi and Coalition forces in Qurna. Reports indicate he recently returned from Iran and is seeking to reestablish his power base in Qurna. The other is said to have been directly involved in at least two lethal attacks on Iraqi Security Forces.

In a separate operation, Hillah Special Weapons and Tactics team detained a suspected Special Groups criminal in Kalsu, approximately 65 kilometers south of Baghdad, and two others on a Ministry of Interior warrant. The suspects are allegedly members of an IED emplacement cell.
