IA, MND-N Soldiers discover IEDs in school
Multi-National Division – North PAO

DIYALA PROVINCE, Iraq – A patrol of Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division- North Soldiers discovered several improvised explosive devices in a school before it could detonate in the village of Tahwilla Aug. 9.

“This in another despicable example of the anti-Iraqi insurgency knowing no boundaries in its cruelty,” said Col. Pat White, Commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Multi-National Division -North. “To rig up a school with explosives in order to potentially kill school children sets another low for these criminals.”

An explosive ordnance disposal team investigated the IEDs and did a controlled detonation on the visible explosives, then called in an air strike to destroy any remaining explosives left in the school. The Diyala province is one of the poorest in Iraq, and the loss of the Tahwilla village school will be a tremendous blow for the area.

Iraqi and Coalition forces give a high priority to protecting civilians and private property. They were successful in disposing of the enemy’s weapons and supplies.

“The criminals were looking for a spectacular event, but ISF and CF foiled their efforts,” said Maj. Wayne Marotto, a spokesman for the 2nd BCT, 1st Armored Division. “The operations in northern Iraq will continue to expand the Government of Iraq’s capability to increase essential services and reconstruction to villages like Tahwilla.”

The Iraqi Army, establishing a long-term presence in Tahwilla, will work with provincial officials to develop a way ahead to replace the school.
