Five more arrested from west Texas polygamist sect
KANSAS CITY STAR ^ | 7/28/08 | APRIL CASTRO

Posted on 07/29/2008 6:44:21 AM PDT by ricks_place

Five indicted members of a West Texas polygamist sect turned themselves in to authorities Monday to face charges related to allegations of child sexual abuse.

The five men were indicted last week with Warren Jeffs, the already-jailed leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The charges stem from a state investigation into allegations that the sect forced underage girls into marriage and motherhood with much older men.

State authorities raided the FLDS's Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado on April 3, eventually sweeping more than 400 children into foster care until the state Supreme Court said officials had overreached and sent the children home.

Raymond Merrill Jessop, 36, Allan Eugene Keate, 56, Michael George Emack, 57, and Merrill Leroy Jessop, 33, were charged with one count each of sexual assault of a child, a felony punishable by a sentence ranging from five to 99 years or life in prison. Their bond was set at $100,000 each.

Merrill Leroy Jessop also was charged with bigamy, a felony with the same potential penalties as the sexual assault charge.

Lloyd Hammon Barlow, 38, the ranch's onsite physician, was charged with three counts of failure to report child abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison. His bond was set at $5,000.

Attorney General Greg Abbott on Monday declined to provide details of what the men were accused of doing.

Efforts to find the men's attorneys were not immediately successful. A message left for FLDS attorney Rod Parker was not immediately returned.

Abbott said the state would try to have Jeffs extradited to Texas to face a charge of sexual assault of a child.

Last week's charges were the first since the April raid.

“Barlow, 38, was indicted on three misdemeanor counts of failure to report child abuse for allegedly overseeing births of children to underage minors on Oct. 14, 2006; Dec. 20, 2006; and May 20, 2007. “

Planned Parenthood oversees the abortion of children from underage minors not the birth.

You don’t know much about the story.
There’s pictures of those back in the compound available at that NYT link. http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/07/27/magazine/0727-ZION_17.html

...some parents are in parenting classes...

I'd guess most of them are mothers. This was one of the stipulations of Judge Walthers, in addition to her imposing traveling restrictions.

I've been puzzled as to how the FLDS parents can/will follow the guidelines of a standard parent class. Because of their belief system, they accept the behavior, the authority, of FLDS men---the very actions that we outside the cult call abuse and rape.

With their indoctrinated minds, it seems to me that standard parenting classes, teachings, will fall on their deaf ears.

I was reading somewhere that the classes are only 8 hours. It’s a start but it seems to me that it needs to be ongoing in order to give support and provide time for questions and feedback.
As for as the men..maybe not older men (and women) whose hearts are hardened, but the younger..learning how to be a better father can’t hurt.

Many of those children were "snatched" from their original parents and brought to Texas.

I've read both the pros and cons on FLDS and I do believe that young girls were brought from Bountiful, Canada, for instance, for the sole purpose of providing addional wives for the men at the YFZ ranch Yes, they were separated from their families. (Can any one of us imagine our own reactions to such treatment?)

Everytime a wife and children were taken from their husband and given to another man, it had to effect the psyches of these human beings.

Some are quick to damn the Texas CPS and Judge Walthers for their actions, which they claim were uncalled-for and devastating to these children and their mothers (who had to be determined by DNA testing).

These same "defenders", naysayers, won't dare address the crimes that are built into the FLDS so-called religion.

This can hardly be considered a religion. It is a cult hiding under the guise of "religion".

...if there are women involved...still ignoring our laws...they need to be arrested too.

Count me as one who won't shed a tear for any guilty woman, especially those who stand by and allow their children to be abused.

...defending the Texas officials...supporting the imprisonment of that German couple...

Is that the best you can conjure up to critize those who are relieved that a state is making efforts to investigate the FLDS for suspected crimes?

Where did you dredge up the accusation that they support the imprisonment of any homeschoolers?

I, for one, was not even aware that Germany does not allow homeschooling, so you sure didn't tell the truth about me!

I suggest you gather some evidence to support your claims.

...learning how to be a better father can't hurt.

I agree with you. That "better" father would not accept, as a wife or "celestial" wife, a girl who is many years younger than he is. That father would not insist that one of his daughters marry anyone on the say so of Warren Jeffs or any of the honchos (maybe himself).

I don't know how men and women can agree to those terms without leaving the FLDS.

You don’t know much about the story.

So you are a comedian too? LOL

You folks are all so funny. You loved it when the CPS snatched the women and children based on nothing more than a hoax and now that they actually have some evidence none of you claim to want the CPS to come back in and snatch the same women and children. It doesn't really matter where they are living does it. The rational is exactly the same.

The hypocrisy is almost unbearable, but I appreciate a good laugh. All you folks supported the CPS snatching the women and children based on nothing more than a hoax and now that the officials actually have some evidence, none of you are calling for the CPS to go back in and snatch the women and children. The irony is killing me.

Then you have the unmitigated gall to continue lying and claim that the children had to be matched to their mothers by DNA testing. I know you have been following the events, do you have selective amnesia?

“none of you are calling for the CPS to go back in and snatch the women and children. The irony is killing me.”

It must be. You’ve repeated it at least twice.

Please explain why you think the CPS should go ‘back in’ and ‘snatch’ women and children.

I want to ask you something.

It is alleged that Warren took, from the other sects of the FLDS (Mexico,Canada,Colorado,Utah,Nevada) families, and parts of families, willingly, or not, to Texas.

Why were they going there?

Your post is illustrative of the (at best) foolish ignorance of those who are championing the big government tyrants who kidnapped all those kids some months back.

They’re coming for your kids too, and the evidence keeps pouring in, week after week.

Recently a child was kidnapped right out of his front yard by Denver CPS tyrants while he was playing. The parents weren’t even notified until the kidnappers were safely away. Probably because the parents have the right to use deadly force here in CO to protect their families and they were fearful for their lives. That happened in an otherwise safe Denver neighborhood. CPS didn’t approve of what the parents were teaching their children.

If the parent had killed one of the CPS tyrants, it would finally bring this otherwise hidden fight against families out into the open. He would have been justified under COlorados ‘Make my Day’ law.

The German homeschooling fight has been going on for more than a year, and involves many families. Just as with FLDS, the government tyrants have kidnapped the children, and finally been forced to release them to the parents. Now one set of parents has been sentenced to prison.

“A mother and father who have been homeschooling their children have been given four weeks to submit a formal appeal of their three-month prison terms, according to a new report.”

“A statement released today by the Home School Legal Defense Association said Juergen and Rosemarie Dudek of Archfeldt, Germany, “have just received their formal written sentence of three months each in prison because they homeschool.”

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=70896

These tyrants are the same the world over, and there are stories every few days about their willingness to do anything to get control over someones children, and the evidence is everywhere. You need to shed your ignorance and become better informed.

Don’t be such a fool, it’s not just the homosexuals who are a threat, government tyrants want to get their hands on your kids too, and they use our laws to do it.

Stop cheering them on, your kids are in their sights too, and you won’t be able to stop them.

“I don’t know how men and women can agree to those terms without leaving the FLDS. “

It’s not that hard for a man to dominate women and children, when you raise them from birth to be obedient to specific ‘rules’.

The men just compete with each other for position. Which is on their knees to the prophet who declared himself THE prophet.

One can attain the level of prophet, in the FLDS, and it’s a title, like bishop.

But, definitely not, God ‘incarnate’.

“government tyrants want to get their hands on your kids too,”

I know. That’s why we should put a stop to the Senate ‘intern’ program.

Why, when I look at those pictures posted at the end of the excerpt, do I think of the movie Reservoir Dogs?

“Though in most cases, I think it would be best to use the legal maneuver where a conviction is obtained, but if the person participates in mandated counseling, education, supervised living situation, community service, etc for a set period of time, and stays out of further trouble, then the conviction is removed from their record.”

Excellent.

Whether anyone ever knows about, or acknowledges it, I think that is what was planned all along.

Remove the bad apples, and let the rest have their barrel back.

It wasn’t kidnapping, in any legal sense of the term.

“If it was Ok to round the women and children up before, isn’t it even more important to round them up now? “

Nope. The only people we are rounding up are those who personally insist we round up other people, instead of discussing the reality of what the authorities are currently doing in following the law.
