Five indicted members of a West Texas polygamist sect turned themselves in to authorities Monday to face charges related to allegations of child sexual abuse.
The five men were indicted last week with Warren Jeffs, the already-jailed leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The charges stem from a state investigation into allegations that the sect forced underage girls into marriage and motherhood with much older men.
State authorities raided the FLDS's Yearning For Zion Ranch in Eldorado on April 3, eventually sweeping more than 400 children into foster care until the state Supreme Court said officials had overreached and sent the children home.
Raymond Merrill Jessop, 36, Allan Eugene Keate, 56, Michael George Emack, 57, and Merrill Leroy Jessop, 33, were charged with one count each of sexual assault of a child, a felony punishable by a sentence ranging from five to 99 years or life in prison. Their bond was set at $100,000 each.
Merrill Leroy Jessop also was charged with bigamy, a felony with the same potential penalties as the sexual assault charge.
Lloyd Hammon Barlow, 38, the ranch's onsite physician, was charged with three counts of failure to report child abuse, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison. His bond was set at $5,000.
Attorney General Greg Abbott on Monday declined to provide details of what the men were accused of doing.
Efforts to find the men's attorneys were not immediately successful. A message left for FLDS attorney Rod Parker was not immediately returned.
Abbott said the state would try to have Jeffs extradited to Texas to face a charge of sexual assault of a child.
Last week's charges were the first since the April raid.

I'd guess most of them are mothers. This was one of the stipulations of Judge Walthers, in addition to her imposing traveling restrictions.
I've been puzzled as to how the FLDS parents can/will follow the guidelines of a standard parent class. Because of their belief system, they accept the behavior, the authority, of FLDS men---the very actions that we outside the cult call abuse and rape.
With their indoctrinated minds, it seems to me that standard parenting classes, teachings, will fall on their deaf ears.
I was reading somewhere that the classes are only 8 hours. It’s a start but it seems to me that it needs to be ongoing in order to give support and provide time for questions and feedback.
As for as the men..maybe not older men (and women) whose hearts are hardened, but the younger..learning how to be a better father can’t hurt.
I've read both the pros and cons on FLDS and I do believe that young girls were brought from Bountiful, Canada, for instance, for the sole purpose of providing addional wives for the men at the YFZ ranch Yes, they were separated from their families. (Can any one of us imagine our own reactions to such treatment?)
Everytime a wife and children were taken from their husband and given to another man, it had to effect the psyches of these human beings.
Some are quick to damn the Texas CPS and Judge Walthers for their actions, which they claim were uncalled-for and devastating to these children and their mothers (who had to be determined by DNA testing).
These same "defenders", naysayers, won't dare address the crimes that are built into the FLDS so-called religion.
This can hardly be considered a religion. It is a cult hiding under the guise of "religion".
Count me as one who won't shed a tear for any guilty woman, especially those who stand by and allow their children to be abused.
Is that the best you can conjure up to critize those who are relieved that a state is making efforts to investigate the FLDS for suspected crimes?
Where did you dredge up the accusation that they support the imprisonment of any homeschoolers?
I, for one, was not even aware that Germany does not allow homeschooling, so you sure didn't tell the truth about me!

I agree with you. That "better" father would not accept, as a wife or "celestial" wife, a girl who is many years younger than he is. That father would not insist that one of his daughters marry anyone on the say so of Warren Jeffs or any of the honchos (maybe himself).
I don't know how men and women can agree to those terms without leaving the FLDS.

I want to ask you something.
It is alleged that Warren took, from the other sects of the FLDS (Mexico,Canada,Colorado,Utah,Nevada) families, and parts of families, willingly, or not, to Texas.
Why were they going there?

Recently a child was kidnapped right out of his front yard by Denver CPS tyrants while he was playing. The parents weren’t even notified until the kidnappers were safely away. Probably because the parents have the right to use deadly force here in CO to protect their families and they were fearful for their lives. That happened in an otherwise safe Denver neighborhood. CPS didn’t approve of what the parents were teaching their children.
If the parent had killed one of the CPS tyrants, it would finally bring this otherwise hidden fight against families out into the open. He would have been justified under COlorados ‘Make my Day’ law.
The German homeschooling fight has been going on for more than a year, and involves many families. Just as with FLDS, the government tyrants have kidnapped the children, and finally been forced to release them to the parents. Now one set of parents has been sentenced to prison.

These tyrants are the same the world over, and there are stories every few days about their willingness to do anything to get control over someones children, and the evidence is everywhere. You need to shed your ignorance and become better informed.
Don’t be such a fool, it’s not just the homosexuals who are a threat, government tyrants want to get their hands on your kids too, and they use our laws to do it.
