Nightmare result for [PM] Gordon Brown as SNP triumph over Labour in Glasgow East
The Times ^ | 7/25/2008 | Philip Webster, Political Editor and Angus Macleod

Posted on 07/24/2008 11:41:19 PM PDT by bruinbirdman

Gordon Brown’s worst nightmare was realised early today as the Scottish National Party triumphed by taking Glasgow East, one of Labour’s safest seats.

The hopes of Labour strategists that their disastrous run of electoral setbacks was about to end were dashed as the SNP’s John Mason achieved the enormous 22 per cent swing required to topple the long-time stronghold.

Mr Mason, a Glasgow councillor, overturned a 13,507 Labour majority at the general election in 2005 to win by 365 votes from Labour’s Margaret Curran. Turnout was just over 42 per cent. Earlier in the day, Labour had requested a recount, which delayed the result being announced by around an hour.

In his victory speech Mr Mason described the result as "not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale. It is an epic win, and the tremors are being felt all the way to Downing Street”.

He added: "We have removed the dead hand of Labour control."

Mrs Curran admitted that the Labour Party had to listen to the voters. “I do believe the Labour Party has to listen and has to hear the message from the people of Glasgow East," she said.

While Mr Brown is not under immediate threat, it was the worst possible result as he prepares for a summer holiday and tries to chart a plan for his own and Labour’s recovery.

The result will intensify doubts among Labour MPs about Mr Brown’s ability to win a general election and could spell trouble at Labour’s conference in the autumn when a weakened Prime Minister will have trouble getting his way on a range of policy issues.

It’s a glorious day. The SNP has “kilt” Labour’s candidate.

Joint monarch, but still seperate nations, hence the wars of 1638 and 1640(and 1650-51, albeit that was Roy. vs Parl.). I get your point, I am just being technically correct, the best kind of correct...lol

Yes, as both a Scot and a British Unionist, even I cant resist winding an Englishman up by pointing out the first joint monarch of both nations was a Scot, after 575 years (1018 to 1603) of attempts to place monarchs on us by force.

“You think the English are going to re-institute the right of prima noctes?”

Oh please! Everyone knows that Brits propogate through bio-engineered hybridization these days. You are so 21st century. The English wouldn’t know what to do.

The idea of Charles Windsor Saxe-Coburg Gotha, private citizen, makes me happy.

William Wallace: Ay, fight and you may die, run and you'll live. At least a while. And dying in your beds many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that for one chance, just one chance to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom.

Thank you. You are correct. The SNP is even more socialist than the British Labour Party.

Somebody photoshopped Gollum’s body onto Keira’s head.

You can even see the airbrush to emphasize bones and ribs.

Fauxny!

I'm half Scottish, half English and I agree with you.

This Glasgow result bodes well for the Conservatives in the next General Election - divide and conquer.

"This Glasgow result bodes well for the Conservatives in the next General Election - divide and conquer."

What's it worth to the Tories?

Labour and SNP love EUrotopia; Tories do not. SNP wants independence. Scotland is a socialist cesspool that drains an English majority. Labour is down the tubes everywhere.

The Tories could cut a deal with SNP. Back their independence for support of UK out of EU. Maybe unload N. Ireland at the same time.

“Although given the ideology of Labour vs. SNP, it wouldn’t be like Pelosi being replaced by a Republican, but by Greenie moonbat Cindy Sheehan.”

Such an event would still its upside for sure.

Once the Tories win the next general election, the Scots, fueled by a renewed sense of anglophobic hatred for being ruled by the English dominated Conservative Party (as opposed to the Scotch dominated Labour Party) will probably push for complete independence.
I’m almost glad in a way, once they leave, we can rename the rest of the UK ‘Toryland’ and see a return to the dominance of Conservatism, and the Scotch can wallow and fail in socialism whilst the UK returns to prosperity and liberty, or at least, more than it would under a Labour government which is kept in place largely thanks to it’s support in Scotland...
