McCain May Pay Jindal a Call

WASHINGTON -- Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain is expected to be in New Orleans on Wednesday night amid reports that he'll sit down with Gov. Bobby Jindal, who is often mentioned as a possible running mate for the Arizona senator.

Jindal said he has no meeting with McCain on his schedule, but McCain staffers told WashingtonPost.com that McCain will be talking to the governor.

The New Orleans stopover raised eyebrows in political circles because it broke with McCain's schedule of appearances in battleground states -- he is well ahead in Louisiana -- and provided no details about his agenda or the people with whom he would be meeting.

A campaign spokesman said late Monday that nothing would be announced officially about the trip until today. This morning, two employees at the New Orleans Airport Hilton Hotel in Kenner said preparations are being made for McCain's arrival Wednesday night.

Jindal, 37, who has said for weeks that he doesn't expect to be asked to be McCain's running mate, declined to respond to questions on MSNBC about whether he has been vetted by the McCain campaign including submission of his tax records.

I think this would be a great move on McCain’s part. Talk about your “youth” vote! Plus—I really like Jindal.

Jindal? I don’t know how I feel about that, I like Palin, but I have to admit that Jindal is quick and sharp. I’ve got to think about this.

Jindal would be wise not to hitch his wagon to this disaster.

Being a native Louisianian, Jindal is needed too much in the state to be ruined by McCain and his campaign.

I disagree. Bringing youth in at the bottom of the ticket will do nothing to counter the media's infatuation with Obama, nor will Hollywood starlets dump Obama for the geeky, un-telegenic Jindal. He looks like he'd be a formidable debate participant, but he hasn't been on the job as governor long enough to warrant a VP selection.

geeky? Untelegenic? Maybe I always went for the geeky but I think he’s great looking. My 22-yo daughter would agree. He performs well in front of a camera from everything I’ve seen him on.

I like Jindal too. That's why I want him to stay as governor of Louisisana. If he can clean up that state, he will be on a national ticket in the future.

We need Jindal as GOP nominee for POTUS, not a VP choice of an insufferable RINO.

I think Jindal is a poor pick for many of the reasons stated here.

There are only two picks I see working for McCain (and the pick)

#1. Romney — already has a level of name recognition, has experience, great debater, more knowledgeable than McCain, can solidify Michigan, palatable to many conservative, isn’t a career pol so he could care less if he hitches his wagon to a loser.

#2. Hillary. For pure entertainment value, this would blow the Obama campaign out of the water, the vitriol would be priceless, the only problem would be that clinton would have to be impeahed during McCain’s first term.

But serving a couple of terms as governor of Louisiana would be excellent trainging for him. He's only 37. He could still be a rather young president if he ran and won in 2016.

Whom should Sen. McCain choose, for his running-mate? I think that, since he’s a westerner who has been a U.S. senator and representative, he should balance the ticket by choosing a conservative who has been a governor from a state that is in the eastern half of the U.S. John Ashcroft would be the perfect choice. Although he ran for re-election to the U.S. Senate and lost to a dead man, he was later the U.S. Attorney General, during the wars against terrorists of Afghanistan and Iraq. That experience would help him, as the running-mate and the VP.

If McCain wins the election, whom should he nominate for some cabinet positions? I think that he should nominate these people: Secretary of State, Dirk Kempthorne; Sec. of Treasury, Ed Schafer; Sec. of Defense, Mel Martinez; Sec. of Homeland Security, Asa Hutchison; Attorney General, John Sweeney; Sec. of the Interior, Richard Pombo; Secretary of Agriculture, Frank Keating; and Chief of Staff, Newt Gingrich.

I had a dream about this subject last night. McCain picked Lieberman!
If McCain runs true to form, he’ll pick someone we can’t stand.
Or he’ll pick someone to satisfy the only bloc he hasn’t yet sewn up, but could. That would be conservatives.
I tend to think he’ll go with the intolerable. Also, he could shoot himself in the foot by picking someone young and inexperienced, undercutting his advantage against Obama.

McCain gives headaches.

I'm agreeing with you. Louisiana is the best state to show the success of Conservative policies on a state and it's people since Louisiana ranks last in positives, and first in positives due to decades of one party rule by the democRAT party.

I would say that in 2012, he would make a great candidate for POTUS. Louisiana will need a few decades of positive policies to erase 100 years of abuse and neglect.

As Rush has said, Jindal is the future of the Conservative Movement.

He says that, because the charasmatic Jindal believes, articulates, and promotes conservativism the way Reagan did.

Good God - Why are FReepers salivating over someone who has not held an elected position for more than 2 consecutive years? Jindal was just elected Governor a little more than a year ago.

I seriously doubt Ashcroft is or should be on McCain's list for VP. He's not a very personable guy, and he looks stiff on camera. He wouldn't attract any voters who weren't already going to vote for the Repulican ticket anyway.

What a freakin' mistake Jindal would be!

This is the same guy that didn't have the 'nads to veto the 135% pay raise that the incompetent and corrupt La legislature voted for themselves!!!

I give up: which is it?

So soon after Bill Clinton, is America ready for another (Vice) Presidential candidate from a small, corrupt Southern state?
