The costs of waiting for Big Oil to do the right thing
The Boston Globe ^ | July 2, 2008 | Joseph P. Kennedy II and William F. Achtmeyer

Posted on 07/19/2008 5:00:26 PM PDT by navyguy

NOTWITHSTANDING a shift by big business to become more socially responsible, Big Oil prides itself in being an island of bullheadedness and smugness.

In a capitalist system, rewards of success go to shareholders. But Big Oil has virtually ignored an equally important constituency - the citizens of the United States - who have granted Big Oil the right to extract the nation's most strategic natural resources. In return, they expect them to act as responsible fiduciaries.

the term “big oil”

when i hear it uttered by someone,

i think, “moron”.

they never criticize the oil producing states such as russia, saudia arabia, kuwait, venezuela, ...

not to mention as pointed out on this thread americans own oil co stocks and funds.

"Nobody is forcing you to buy from "Big Oil""

Actually they are forcing people to use their oil every time their lobbyists kiss butt with lawmakers to vote against reasonable alternatives and every year they entice automakers to refrain from making hybrids in mass.

Oh and it's beyond ridiculous to tell people to ride a horse to the office or use one to transport products. The piles of shi*t alone would create a whole new branch of government.

How, exactly, do they do that?

But Big Oil has virtually ignored an equally important constituency - the citizens of the United States - who have granted Big Oil the right to extract the nation's most strategic natural resources.

They blame this on BIG OIL??? What an idiot this author is. For 40 years, the liberals in congress have fought, tooth and nail, against any form of energy production including coal-fired power plants, nuclear power, and drilling for oil. Let the chips fall where they belong - at the hands of the leftists that wish to destroy this country.

And besides, the citizens didn't grant Big Oil the right to extract anything - they leased and/or bought the lands or mineral rights necessary. They owe the citizens nothing since the citizens don't own the rights to the oil.

someone is sucking up to Hugo Chavez again, could it be that Joe pays himself more than half a million dollars a year from his "non profit" company

Citizens Energy Corp. is a nonprofit organization. But the Kennedy family has extensive oil interests, author Peter Schweizer reveals in his best-selling new book "Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy." According to Schweizer, "oil deposits have generated tens of millions in profits for the Kennedy clan … In total, family revenue from crude oil and natural gas is more than $1 million a year.”

I’m not sure whether this article by Joseph P. Kennedy II qualifies him as a fascist or a communist.

It’s one of the two.

The time to wait for Big Oil to act voluntarily and make investment decisions on behalf of all its constituencies is over. Similar to public utilities, Big Oil should be permitted (?) to earn a fair return based on its cost of capital - about 8 percent over the past decade. (that is what they make) Below this point, Big Oil would qualify for development credits currently granted by the US government to incent the industry to find new energy sources. Above this, the credit would be denied.

Above this, the credit would be denied.

??????

Denied by whom? If “big oil” is so good at subversive activity doesn’t this noron think they could make “profits” appear to hold steady at eight percent? Or would they even bother to conduct business once the magic eight percent had been reached?

Are any other businesses going to be subject to the “Eight Percent Rule?” How about DeBeers? Yea, how about them. You know that gasoline is considered a luxury, right?

"How, exactly, do they do that?"

I take it you are not in the business business. It's call networking, back scratching, back slapping, incentives, buddying up, greasing palms, showing them the money, kickbacks, insider deals, marrying into the biz, inner elitist circles, giving them an offer they can't refuse, influence and getting'er done. The big business political merry-go-round.

"Big Oil prides itself in being an island of bullheadedness and smugness."

Big oil is in the business of making money...end of story.

Big oil is not responsible to look for alternative energy...the Congress is supposed to do that. If you want a mommy oil company then just have your revolution, go communist and get it over with.

OK I forced myself to read this excrement. I must say that I knew it was going to be excrement even before I read it knowing it was written by Joe Kennedy. Oh how I hate that family. The amount of damage that family has done to this nation is beyond belief.

"Citizens Energy Corp. is a nonprofit organization..."

That is a lie, unless something has changed recently.

Citizens Energy Corp. maks a lot of profit. Profit totals are uavailable to the public, but a number of people are taking very good paychecks home including Joe (The Wizard of Duhhs) Kennedy himself.
