Hitting someone with a baseball bat is ‘assault with a dangerous or deadly weapon’ and could possibly be considered ‘attempted murder’. Both of those offenses are felonies.

Actually sounds like a assault & battery. Assault is the crime of putting a reasonable person in fear of life or greivous bodily harm. Battery is doing it without actually, you know, killing them.
Of course, we only have junior's account. Dad may have told him to get out of his house (for reasons having nothing to do with gay pride) and junior balked, a scuffle ensued and junior whipped out the gay card.
