The same day a John McCain surrogate dismissed economic woes from a nation of "whiners," Barack Obama's wife quipped that the $600 tax stimulus check could be used for a pair of earrings.

But I thought she didn’t want us to embrace “middleclassness”. So why in the world would anyone other than middle or upper middle class spend 600 bucks on ONE pair of earrings when you can get much more at Claire’s in the mall or Wal-Mart for pity sake???? Maybe she is talking about a pair of David Yurman earrings which sell at Neiman-Marcus ( also known as Needless Markup by those in the REAL world).

Send your $600/$1200 to me, I’m not too proud to be a money grubber, but I’ll be darned if I’d spend it on a pair a baubles for my ears. The problem with "grubbing" is that it's not a good use of time and energy. The person grubbing today can expect to be grubbing this time next year - and probably for a lot less. If I'm to settle for crumbs falling from the table of our "esteemed" leaders then I might as well move into public housing and start using food stamps.
Maybe "pride" isn't a wholly negative attribute(?)
