Fourth of July Flopitis
Private Papers ^ | July 5, '08 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 07/05/2008 6:53:36 PM PDT by T.L.Sink

The question is no longer on what has Obama backtracked, but rather on what has he not? The political problems with Obama's flipitis are twofold: one, it's coming late in the season. To defeat Hillary he went hard left in the void left by Edwards. But the primary dragged on so long, that when he recently flipped and flopped to leave the hard left on NAFTA, Trinity Church, Rev. Wright, FISA, gun control, campaign financing, death penalty, Iraq, Iran, Jerusalem, etc. he did so in the summer, not late winter. The result is that his formerly left positions were showcased longer than most go-to-the-center politicians. Second, to employ a well-known Obamism, Obama 'raised the bar' so high with its 'hope and change' sophistry about transcending lobbyists, tawdry campaign financing, et al. that he is now being hoisted on his own petard - flip-flopping is the normal sort of rank opportunism, but for a messiah it is tantamount to sacrilege and heresy. The problem is not that the Left will abandon him; they won't. But watch the furor if Obama sinks below McCain in the polls. The problem is that Obama's new legions of hopers and changers won't register, work, and turn out in sufficient numbers if they feel they've been made to look silly, and Obama is just another Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale/John Kerry. Next flip? I expect he will soon "refine" his views of lifting the Social Security tax ceilings - once we start hearing about 60% plus state and federal tax bites.

Hanson may be right. If polls come to favor McCain and enough of Obama's supporters realize that they've made to look like fools by supporting a false messiah, they may just drop out.

Don’t count on them dropping out...You make the erroneous assumption, that Obama’s followers are “thinking”.

Obama should have a wind vane for his logo.

Bingo. THINKING people would have seen through his lies already, and would not be supporting him.

I have said on other threads, I expect the dem convention to realize Barry is an empty suit and dump him in favor of Hillary. She WILL get her revenge.

***Obama should have a wind vane for his logo.***

It would look perfect on his presidential seal.

A one hit wonder, indeed. But not nearly as attractive as the ones who appeared on Marpessa Dawn! Thanks,

You may be right but what I don’t understand is why Clinton, Inc. didn’t get him during the primaries when it really counted. Is it because the Clinton machine is out of power and hasn’t the power and resources to conduct its usual total destruction assaults?

You may be right about that but I sort of divide Obama’s supporters into two categories: (1) Blacks who are always 90+ percent Democrats but who will turn out in record numbers because (god forbid!) of race and because Obama is black and (2) the elite “intellectual” element. I think the latter will really be disillusioned and realize that Obama represents the same old bullshit, only worse. Those “elites” are ideologues and take ideas and political double-talk very seriously. They are also very influential in the MSM. I think that’s the element that may become disillusioned and drop out. Of course, they hate McCain so much they’ll never admit it and will play the “unity” game to the end. But I think they know that Obama is a fraud and will not have any natural or sincere enthusiasm for his candidacy.

Heh...'refine' is the 2008 version of John Kerry's 'nuance' of 2004. The stories this past week about FISA and Iraq actually look like prototypical commercials with clips of Obama contradicting himself. I hope the 527s have the ads in production already.

I smell McCain landslide. The disillusionment factor is setting for the Dems.

Thank you for articulating much better than I could have had. Your analysis is right on target and very thought provoking in a streamlined summarized way.

Victor Hanson, "He (Obama) is now being hoisted on his own petard - flip-flopping is the normal sort of rank opportunism, but for a messiah it is tantamount to sacrilege and heresy."

Listed below are some comments from other Obama observers:

"There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience. This is the change he promised , This reality of his so called change, shows him to be a typical lying liberal politician."

"You can be sure there will never be any clear answers from Obama on any critical issue. He is quite comfortable taking positions that contradict each other. Sadly, his inconsistent and dishonest positions are perfectly acceptable to his Obamabot cult members, who blindly follow him. His brainwashed MSM Mediots turn their heads when he flip flops or says what a great politician he is, after he flips and flops!"

Instead of the change candidate, Hussein ObamaMessiaHamas, will be known as the Ooops Uh Flip-Flop Candidate, who couldn't tell the truth!

Quit your whining about my Flip Flops, Waffling and Lies, you God Loving, Gun owning and Bitter White Racist Patriots!

Damn Pajama Media. They won’t let me get by with my lies and flip flopping.
