Obama and the hoi aristoi
The Corner on National Review Online ^ | July 02, 2008 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 07/03/2008 8:22:30 AM PDT by Uncle Ralph

It is not hard to see why and how the middle classes, the poor, and the union members would like to see larger government programs and greater taxes on the wealthy, but why are so many in the upper-upper middle classes so vehemently pro-Obama? Are they that confident in the public schools, teachers' unions, swearing off their archaic gasoline engines, wanting restrictions on free trade and globalization, and living in mixed, integrated working-class neighborhoods?

One paradox about the Obama campaign is that in terms of aggregate cash, most of his total donations are of the larger sort, and they tend to come from the informational, investment, and financial class that has done so well by globalization.

Which raises the question, since so many financial supporters are above the $100,000 income bracket and perhaps in terms of joint income, above the benchmark $250,000 level at which Obamonics begins to really hurt, why such lop-sided support from these elites? ...

It just dawned on me that the reason the well-off support the democrats is exactly the same reason they will buy carbon credits. You can buy yourself out of feeling guilty!

It’s been sighted in Florida, too, but I don’t have any pictures to prove it yet.

It’s a real conversation starter which I have used to our side’s great advantage so far.

Between my “Operation Chaos” bumper stickers, and my NoBama bumper stickers, I can turn a lot of heads -— and “minds” following -— if I get the chance to talk to them.

The hoi aristoi flatter and flagellate themselves mercilessly with the Obama whips and chains of carbon crediting and super good looks. Go down in history with the beautiful people in tow to the slave quarters of working for the planet one day, and hanging with the beautiful black Emperor the next... having it all.

Great, that's the exact intent. Get a pic and upload it. I will start a thread this weekend about pics of anti-Obama bumper stickers around the country.

I had a conversation with four people in our church parking lot last week when they saw my BUMPER STICKER and asked about it as I was loading folding chairs into my pickup.

They were surprised to learn about Obama's long standing relationship with the terrorist William Ayers, the truth about Black Liberation Theology and its origins, and particularly about the Live Birth abortion issue.

They all promised to look deeper into it on their own...but I can tell you now, there are four more people who are now avid opponents of Obama and who indicated they woudl contact their family and friends.

This is how we will win this...by truth spreading through the grassroots.

...and it is spreading.

So what? There is no requirement that the incorporation of foreign language terms as "figures of speech" into English must rigidly conform to English grammatical rules. As you well know, in the commonly accepted usage of the term "hoi polloi" in English it is almost always referred to as "the hoi polloi". Hanson knows perfectly well the literal meaning of the Greek, but he also knows the importance of writing in a manner to best reach his intended audience.

If you must satisfy a compulsive need to engage in pedant twittery, however, then knock yourself out...

“...Somehow an Obama sticker, sign on the lawn, or a lapel button has become the equivalent of a crucifix around the neck of a prosperous 16th-century burgher: easy fides of inner good and a valuable totem in reconciling the apparent irreconcilable.”

Buying indulgences. Dems are soooo very eager to pounce on any hypocrisy on the part of conservatives, republicans. They don’t see theirs...

It is not hard to see why and how the middle classes, the poor, and the union members would like to see larger government programs and greater taxes on the wealthy, but why are so many in the upper-upper middle classes so vehemently pro-Obama?

Two reasons. First, when bucks are plentiful, as in two-income, no-kids households, common sense tends to fly out the window at the speed of light.

Second, this type of individual really gets off on presenting himself as virtuous at all the glittery events he goes to. A vote for RATS promising to take care of "the least among us" sounds so much more virtuous than a vote for the GOP. Of course in reality, it's a vote for pure for evil, but when you've lost your common sense, it's too hard to figure that out.

The elite NEVER believe that the revolution will eat them first. They think the angel of ‘social justice’ will see their social conscience and good intentions and pass over.

"...gets off on presenting himself as virtuous at all the glittery events he goes to..."

I agree in principle. I'm not sure if it is all about glittery events though. It's about image with friends at the local bar and $100/plate restaurant.

Have any of you watched Planet Green channel yet? There is this show called something like Greenovation. It's people renovating their homes in "green" ways.

The people renovating their homes are incredible. For the most part they are self indulgent, self important, egocentric, insecure fools who want the world to know that they are "green". They are the Palo Alto types this article describes.

Watch a couple of episodes. You'll be convinced the entire nation is full of people preening like high school prom queens. "look at me. look at me. see how great I am." And these people are wealth earners. They are the ones that should know better.

On a related note, it's amazing how metrosexualism is so encouraged on shows like this. As a guy, I like hanging out with guys' guys. I don't know how women would want to be with a man with the lines so blurred. It occurs to me that some women are becoming metrosexual too. Meaning... they are becoming more masculine in their attitudes. McCain's people need to find a way to highlight the metrosexual vs. real man angle of this campaign.

I’ll try and get a picture as soon as I can and let you know.

Here is another funny anecdotal story. I stopped at Mobil-1 to get a quick oil-change the other evening and the two young guys working on my car couldn’t resist commenting on my NoBama sticker. Before I got done with them, they were very sobered and promising to “do their duty” this November. They weren’t just talking, either - they had never voted before, but were adamant that they were going to convince their family and friends to make sure Obama doesn’t get any where NEAR the White House.

And that was with full understanding that McCain was no prize, either, but there are only two _viable_ political parties and a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Obama.

And I made sure they understood that even if McCain wins, he will never be able to fulfill his campaign promises if the DemocRATS win more seats in both houses of congress. I told them that the ‘RATS will have enough votes to over-ride any of his vetos and/or never even allow any of his court nominees to even come to the floor for a vote. I told them that we must vote a straight Republican ticket this time even if we have to put a closepin on our noses. They understood and fully agreed.

Hee hee hee.

I grew up attending NYC Prep schools and then Columbia. I know these people.
Hanson is correct, but there is more. Many of the ultra wealthy are rich thanks to the government. Government contracts, H-1B Visa amd illegal immigrant labor, and regulations all make some very rich. Some would like to use regulation to help secure the position of their company (Phillip Morris?). Others have so much money that it no longer interests them, but power does.

Finally, you must understand that most are not the American rich but the trans-national elite, who just happen to come from America.
