Press Release A080729a-264
July 29, 2008

Al-Qaeda support structure dwindling

BAGHDAD – Coalition forces killed one known terrorist facilitator and detained 18 suspected terrorists during operations around the country to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq operations Monday and Tuesday.

Coalition forces killed a known terrorist facilitator during an operation in Baghdad on Tuesday. When the force arrived at the target location, the targeted man came out and refused to follow the interpreter’s instructions to surrender. Approaching the force, the man made a threatening movement. Coalition forces perceived hostile intent and engaged the terrorist, killing him. He was part of a terrorist facilitation network that provides false documents and moves supplies around Iraq. In another operation on Tuesday in Baghdad, Coalition forces detained two suspected terrorists while targeting a car-bombing cell.

East of Samarra, about 110 kilometers north of Baghdad, Coalition forces captured an alleged AQI leader and one additional suspect Tuesday. The wanted man reportedly oversees terrorist activity in the region and recruits females to conduct suicide bombings.

Coalition forces targeted associates of AQI senior leaders during operations in and around Mosul Tuesday and detained 13 suspected terrorists.

Monday, Coalition forces identified a suspected foreign terrorist facilitator driving southwest of al-Qaim, about 325 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. They stopped the man, who was with four children, and detained him without incident. Coalition forces drove the children home and left them in the care of female family members.
