A Nation Mourns As Death Toll Rises To 17 In Twin Bomb Attacks In Istanbul
The two bombs that exploded minutes apart in a packed Istanbul street Sunday night killed 17 civilians including a pregnant woman and five young children. Of over 150 that were wounded 50 remain in the hospitals, seven of them in serious condition. This was the deadliest attack targeting civilians in Turkey in many years.
Funeral prayer for 10 of the victims was held today in an Istanbul mosque, with the participation of PM Tayyip Erdogan, cabinet ministers, Istanbul’s governor, representatives of political parties and thousands of citizens that filled the streets around the mosque.
Earlier today PM Erdogan visited the site of the attack and urged all citizens to show unity in face of terrorism. According to media reports the investigation seems to focus on PKK, the outlawed Kurdish separatist organization that has carried out many attacks inside Turkey.
