Jennifer Hecht, education director at the Stop AIDS Project in San Francisco, said that lack of access to information was a key factor in the increase in infection rates.

“In a lot of ways this is connected to the administration’s policy of emphasizing abstinence-only education,” she said. “And the high rates we see among black men and other minorities indicate that it’s very much connected to larger issues like poverty and racism.”

Is this really true? We’ve been hearing about condoms and “safe sex” for over 20 years now. Is she serious, that the message hasn’t penetrated because of Bush?

It’s just hard to believe that she can say with a straight face that lack of access to information about how AIDS is spread, and what to do to prevent infection is a cause of this.

Speechless. Just... speechless.

Yes, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with gay men behaving badly, taking wild risks with their own health and that of others by engaging in degenerate sexual acts long known to be dangerous.

The New York Times really is a piece of crap. Look at the utterly dishonest headline designed to evade personal responsibility and shift the blame. What they are saying is that it's Bush's fault and that "young men and African-Americans" are the hardest hit.

Absolutely disgusting.

Headline: rates rise among young men.

First sentence: rates rise among homosexuals while declining among everybody else.

Someone here is lying.

"about half of the American AIDS epidemic is occurring among a few percent of the adult population. And the terrible trends we’re seeing among white gay men are even amplified further among minority men."

As usual, a few % of the population is thoroughly depraved and vicious, and the Demagogues are always devoted to supporting and perpetuating their "lifestyles"

The annual increase was still higher among young African-American men who have sex with men, nearly 15 percent.

Among African-American men of all ages who have sex with men, the annual increase in diagnoses was 1.9 percent.

Experts said yesterday that the new statistics were an ominous -- but not necessarily surprising -- indicator that the epidemic continues to flourish among gay men more than 25 years after it began.

Seems the headline H.I.V. Diagnosis Rates Continue to Rise Among Young Men, African-Americans left out the part about who have sex with men. What's the big surprise here?

I find it impossible to believe that anybody today doesn't know homosexual acts are risky and lead to AIDS.

It is entirely the fault of men having sex with men.

There is no law that one must engage in that deadly behavior. Therefore, it is a choice.

The increase in AIDS infection is due to the effectiveness of new AIDS drug treatments. Gays that would have otherwise died of AIDS are being kept alive and spreading the disease further and wider.

Jennifer, the increase in infection rates is not due to a lack of access to information. It's due to unmentionable behavior, and something called "bug-chasing."

This is “grim” news to this doctor? Perhaps only from the perspective of gays.

For the rest of us, I think it’s a cause to be celebrated that it’s not endemic in the rest of society.

It’s not like heteros are going unscathed by STDs. Apparently 1 in 5 adult Americans has genital herpes! You never get rid of it! 20% is a HUGE percentage. You look at 5 adults, statistically 1 in 5 can have it. Of course, again it probably hits hardest in high risk subsets but still, you gotta think if it’s 20% of the “overall” population, it’s gotta be 50% or more in certain groups of heteros (promiscuous, iv drug users, swingers, whatever).

I want a sex registry database. (not really) Or a license to have sex registry, and all sex partners must have their sexual liasons put in a database, so that their exposures to STDs can be tracked and so that potential sex partners can know a person’s sex history before he/she gets involved with the other person. We have databases that record vehicle collision histories and what-not. Why not sex histories?????????????????????

I really am not being serious, but it would be helpful . . .

“In a lot of ways this is connected to the administration’s policy of emphasizing abstinence-only education,” she said.

No, it's related to the Myth of the Suffering AIDS Victim among homosexuals.

It's Drama Queen Stuff.

“And the high rates we see among black men and other minorities indicate that it’s very much connected to larger issues like poverty and racism.”

No, it's the Down-Low Syndrome among Black bisexuals and homosexuals. They are in denial about their behavior.
