Joe Klein: People Like Obama Aren’t Let Into Republican Country Clubs
NewsBusters.org ^ | 6/24/2008 | Matthew Balan

Joe Klen, Time magazine Columnist | NewsBusters.orgIn a statement reminiscent of Howard Dean’s controversial statement from 2005 about the RNC and "people of color," Time magazine columnist Joe Klein blasted Karl Rove’s recent slam of Barack Obama on Monday’s "Election Center" program on CNN. "I just think that the image is kind of hilarious when you think about it: Barack Obama at a country club sipping a martini. It's kind of a parody of the Republican view of the world. Everybody belongs to -- since when [did] we start letting people like Barack Obama into Republican country clubs?"

"People like Barack Obama"? That sounds like Dean’s "You think the RNC could get this many people of color into a single room?... Maybe if they got the hotel staff in there."

"Election Center" substitute host Wolf Blitzer read Rove’s quote earlier in the segment, which began 22 minutes into the 8 pm Eastern hour of the CNN program: "Even if you never met him, you know this guy. He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall, and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."

Because if he were to emphasize that he’s just as much a White guy, everyone would see him for the schmuck he really is.

“but secretly fear ALL blacks and will vote for the white guy (or gal) when the curtain is closed.”

Every time I hear a favorable poll for Obama I wonder if people will really vote the way they answer pollsters questions. The race issue is so volatile that I wonder if ‘good liberals’ would have the guts to say publicly they don’t like Obama for fear of the bigot label, but will vote differently when they can do so anonymously.

BECA's Third Annual fundraiser at Davis Municipal Golf Course earned more than $1,000 for tuition awards to deserving local students. We thank all who took part!

Hey Joe, what ‘we’ are you talking about? Who’s being racist now? BTW, Rove never said Republican country club.

“Everybody belongs to — since when [did] we start letting people like Barack Obama into Republican country clubs?”

Yeah, all Republicans are racist knuckle-dragging thugs. Utter garbage.

Two of the most racially diverse places I know are my parent’s neighborhood ($400k and up homes) and their former country club. The cc in particular used to be exclusively Jewish, but quite a while ago, they openned up the doors to all comers who (a) had good references and (b) paid the dues. Membership when my parents left (they just weren’t going enough to justify the cost) included Jews, Catholics, blacks, whites, Indians (from India), native Americans, etc., etc. Definitely generally Republican, too.

Obama Skips Hillary’s Speech & Plays Golf

I am extremely shocked to hear that while Hillary was giving her speech today, Obama was out playing Golf. Just goes to show how much Obama really cares about Hillary and Hillary supporters.

So how do you feel about Obama skipping out on Hillary’s speech for a round of golf? Post your thoughts in the comments

Everyone has asked for a source. Here is one from the Boston Globe: Just do a google news or a google blogsearch on the keywords “Obama Golf”

I haven’t seen so many rich, proper black people since Bill Cosby came to town.

(BTW, I’m black).

I have never heard of a 'Republican country club'. The ones that I am aware of don't ask for your political affiliation or care what color you are to join. All they care about is whether you can pay your bill on time!

BTW, most of the people I know in the country club are DEMOCRAT trust fund babies. Their grandparents made the money, their parents invested it and they are spending it!

My last boss was black... and he was a member of a country club. Further, the only time this white man was on a golf course... he ended up getting thrown off.

Go stuff that in your crack-pipe Joe Klein!

“I don’t think “White Guilt” is going to get very far.”

Very true. White people pretend to be politically correct and show white guilt when they are afraid of losing their jobs for not acting pro-minority. In the privacy of a voting booth and immune from reprisals, they will probably not allow white guilt to sway them.

The best golfers at our local country club are black and this is Arkansas (we are supposed to be the racist’s rednecks). Go figure. You would think people like Joe Klein would get a clue way up there in his ivory tower. I bet that is how Klein thinks and he is just projecting.

Do you think they'd invite Clarence Thomas to join their country club?

I sent Blitzer an email telling them that Joe Klein is a biggot and if he didn’t fire him or remove him from the air, then that meant CNN embraces bigotry.

Snicker.

I can try, right?
