McCain calls for $300 million prize for car battery

FRESNO, California (Reuters) - Republican John McCain said on Monday if elected president he would challenge American experts to develop a futuristic battery to power cars and win a $300 million prize.

McCain, a week after taking heat from Democrats for reversing his stance on offshore oil drilling after long opposing it, sought to portray himself as a forward-looking leader on solving America's energy crisis.

With Americans reeling from record-high $4-a-gallon gasoline during the prime summer driving season, both McCain and his Democratic opponent in the November election, Barack Obama, are pressing their proposals for tackling energy problems that are dragging down the U.S. economy.

McCain noted that Brazil has largely weaned itself from oil imports by converting most new cars to flex-fuel capacity that use alcohol-based fuels. Brazil went from 5 percent to 70 percent of flex-fuel new cars in three years, he said.

"Whether it takes a meeting with automakers during my first month in office, or my signature on an act of Congress, we will meet the goal of a swift conversion of American vehicles away from oil," McCain told a town hall meeting in Fresno, in rural central California.

The Arizona senator, 71, who would be the oldest person elected to a first presidential term, finds himself behind Obama in polls but not by a wide margin.

But in a worry for him, a USA Today/Gallup poll published on Monday said voters are most concerned about energy and the economy and they prefer Obama by a double-digit margin on each.

I’ll sell him the battery out of my car for like half of that...

Probably a result of an all-night brainstorming session with his economic advisors.

I cannot afford to buy another car, I am retired, fixed income and drive old cars that get good miliage. Is the Government going to buy my old cars for a good price so I can buy one of these “flex fuel” cars or one of the super, duper electric cars McCain sees as the future to the country? I will vote for this stupid POS, and stupid he is, but only because the communist Obama is running against him.

300mill!? what a cheapskate.

A battery that could power a car to run powerfully for a reasonable distance and charge very very quickly...and also had a long or permanent lifespan would be worth far more than a measly 300 million prize.

A super capacitor to power a car would be great.
Charge it in a few minutes and go.

That is what the GOP is counting on in their ever-leftward march, that people will continue use the lessor-of-two-evils logic as the basis of their votes.

As for me, I made the last such choice when I pulled the lever for Arnold here in California.

He has turned out to be a disastor and so will John McCain.

No more for me.

The GOP will earn my vote by putting up a candidate that represents me and my conservative values.

Otherwise, they can go pound sand as far as I am concerned.

If I have to, I will write in the name of a conservative at the top of the ticket and vote for all True Republicans in down-stream races.

Well if Obama wins, maybe he will take a car from a CEO of Big Oil and give it to you in the name of the “People.” Let’s not look at the glass as “half empty.”

Wow! I knew Cindy had some money, but $300 million? I wonder if they will retain the rights for the battery and therefore make the money back...

So, who would OWN this new battery? The government?

If I could invent one, I’d say “no thanks” to the gubmint and make a billion or so myself.

No doubt this proposal along with the other proposals McCain has made to solve the energy problem will not be enough for those folks on this forum that have all the answers.

So you mean the electric car is a sham because there are no batteries which can store as much as a gallon of gasoline? Oh man, I hate it when that happens, you design your electric car and forget the battery.

Who knew there were no batteries that could store sufficient energy to make an electric car useful ... well I did, and probably every other engineer inclined person who is still awake.

Maybe Comrade Obama will take to the pulpit of his new church for moonbats, global warming, and provide the way forward. Beats burning food.

Sort of like Honda and their fuel cell car, that only costs $250,000 when they finally admit it. And oh BTW, Hydrogen is not a free element, it has to be manufactured somehow.

We need to get the nonsense and government out of science.

LOL, 'taking heat'....right. It's one of McCain's few smart moves to date. If anyone is taking heat on this issue, it is Obama. If the Democrats want to run on higher gas prices, BRING IT ON!

The problem is that McCain is competing for that title with the same type of rhetoric and big-government plans.
