WORKING out last Monday, I heard a campaign flunky on TV insist that progress in Iraq is an illusion. "The war isn't over until all of the troops come home!" she grumped. Guess we're still at war with Germany. And Japan. Even Italy. Oh, and let's not forget all of our military bases occupying the Confederacy.
The poor woman knew nothing about warfare, history - or Iraq. She just wanted to see her candidate win in November and wasn't going to let reality get in the way.
And one look told you she didn't even know any "troops."
But after my initial shrug (back to the bench for more crunches), it struck me how wrong I'd been on a point I'd argued for two decades: I claimed that Western societies have an advantage because of their insistence on factual data.
Yet, since 9/11, I've seen and heard no end of my fellow citizens' arguing from blind passion and utterly refusing to ingest facts that didn't match their prejudices (left or right). Since the turnabout in Iraq began a year and a half ago, the rejection of reality has become an outright pathology for the quit-Iraq-and-free-the-terrorists set.
I've watched millions of my countrymen and countrywomen insist that fantasies are real. In a classic through-the-looking-glass reversal last year, Sen. Hillary Clinton told Gen. David Petraeus, the man who turned Iraq around, that his reports of progress were fairy tales. It was the world turned upside down.
Since that woman on TV "explained" victory last Monday, I've thought about the different kinds of people who refuse either to accept that the situation in Iraq has improved remarkably or that quitting now would have serious consequences.

Very good article by Ralph Peters. America’s finest, the Coalition’s finest and Iraq’s finest ARE changing the world...for the better.

Only if “Barack the Magic Negro” (thanks Shanklin/Rush) the fairy-tale candidate’s (thanks Bill Clinton) book(s) (thanks Barack) are opened and read by enough Americans.

I was thinking that another effective “tool” (liberal term) is the good ol’ home PC printer and scanner. Lots of talent out here for flyers, leaflets, I mean look what Thomas Paine was able to do, eh? The advantage is that a lot of stupid people don’t know how to read so they would be cut out of the loop to do less damage.
Ralph seems a bit annoyed. Good takedown.
Another excellent piece by Ralph Peters, thanks for posting.
I look forward to his articles because of his knowledge of recent history, the military and especially his common sense.
Sad to say .. this is still a major issue .. getting the info to the public.
I think it’s up to those of us who watch FOX and listen to talk radio - to print out articles and such to give to those who don’t bother to listen.
Case in point - a co-worker has completely changed his mind about “global warming” because I just kept feeding him with articles about the “facts”. I’m very fortunate that most of my co-workers lean conservative.
Also .. a great article like this can go a long way to leading someone into the truth about Iraq .. primarily because Ralph Peters is seen on TV on a fairly regular basis and the next time a person sees him on TV - they will remember what he wrote in this article - that’s very powerful.
Also .. recently I was stunned to see a “street interview” with a lot of people out strolling in NYC - they all seemed like fairly normal people - no real weirdos - BUT NOT ONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT “ANWR” WAS ALL ABOUT.
Proving once again we have our work cut out for us if we are going to help educate the public about the truth of ANWR - which is: it’s scrub brush land and not a pristine forest. I have pictures if anybody wants them.
