A young Turlock man parked a pickup truck on a dark country road outside his Central Valley city Saturday night, removed a baby boy from a car seat and then viciously beat the child in the street, fighting off passersby who tried to stop him until he was fatally shot by a police officer whose helicopter landed in a nearby pasture, police said today.
The 27-year-old suspect died immediately where he fell. The child, who according to police appeared to be 12 to 24 months old, was rushed to a hospital but was soon pronounced dead as well.
Police officials declined to identify the man this morning and said they did not yet know who the child was - or what his relationship was to his attacker. No information was immediately available about the baby's mother.
The suspect "had tunnel vision," said Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Royjindar Singh, a department spokesman. "As people tried to intervene, to tackle him, he just went back to what he was doing. Anything and everything he could do to the baby, that's what he was doing."

Bad things can and do happen anywhere nowadays. We see that daily.
Of course this this particular crime occurred in California, on a dusty, rural road, lined by crops. But hey, it's a great opportunity for some to attack the entire state, and point fingers at everyone except the dead child killer.
Unfortunately the Central Valley is home to a lot of meth labs and is on the main drug smuggling line from Mexico to points north and east. I personally suspect meth because the labs are frequently in those out-of-the-way places like this nightmare happened. (OTOH, a few years ago my upper middle-class exurban neighbor in our town just forty miles north of Turlock was arrested for running a meth lab out of her garage.)
“The FR cop-haters don’t seem to have found this thread yet. Perhaps they are all over at DU at the moment. “
Perhaps you joined FR from DU? Cops carry guns for instances just like this. Comparing this instance to one where the cops enter the wrong house and kill someone (for example) is pathetic.
I’m figuring that what he’d done until his untimely death (not soon enough) already killed the baby, so the end was him dying.
Sad for the baby though, agree with others that a CCW among the bystanders would have saved the day.
“13 months ago, he wasnt a baby and It wouldnt have been a crime.”
It would still have been a crime, just not against the law.
yes...and shedding tears right now at the horrible story.
That’s about it isn’t it? Sad and we can do nothing.
How about a brick?
How about breaking a window and using the glass shards to stop him?
How about a shoe, a rock, stones, hair spray, bug spray. Anything to get him off that baby.
I hate him. I hate people like him. I hope he burns in hell. I hope he burns and burns and burns and burns and burns. If only we could bring the baby back and begin over with the baby being raised with people who love him and would protect him. We can’t and so the only consolation is the baby is in the arms of the Lord and will forever be happy. However, who was there to take away the pain and suffering this little child endured? It breaks your heart.
I’m glad he was shot. However that was too quick for him. I know I should not say that but I say it and I mean it. Nothing I say could EVER compare to the evil that that devil had inside him.
No surprise there.
But first he stands in judgement before our Lord, where the torment is only beggining.
DUers normally don’t have an issue with killing babies. Its the use of a gun that outrages them.
Uh. Hello. After the flood, God put his “bow” in the sky as a symbol of his promise never to destroy the earth by WATER again. He didn’t promise it wouldn’t be by fire, which is spoken of in the New Testament as the way it will go as in “the elements will dissolve with a fervent heat”. The earth has already been very hot during creation, but we were in a safe place when that happened, just like we will be if it happens like the NT says.
Uh. I don’t remember posting anything about choosing and responsibility or God failing or any of the other things your reply mentioned.
No matter where I go...A gun, a knife ..a breaker bar..and leaded weighted tire knocker(mini-bat).
I just thought of what I have in the car right now that could be useful in such cases, and I must admit that I have nothing there that would have stopped the crime. I probably have some flimsy jack buried below the trunk's floor, but it would take an eternity to get to it. The deadliest thing I have that is readily available is a bottle of glass cleaner. Maybe keeping a Taser, like C2, handy is a good idea ... it's legal in CA but not legal in 8 other states and a few largest cities (where it would do most good, naturally, that's why it's not allowed there :-)
Nobody hates a cop who does his job honestly and with honor.
It’s a pity that (in most people’s real-world experience) such good cops are rare.
It’s enough to make you weep. How, HOW could any person do such a thing?
Bare hands works for me.
