“I’ll admit to you … that it’s tough in some respects,(to be pround of the USA)”

“We have not always done things right and we mismanaged the war in Iraq very badly for nearly four years

“I think we can be proud of America because of what we’ve achieved and accomplished in this world,” he said.

I think what he was trying to say was that it's hard to be pround of things like slavery. He didn't mean he wasn't proud of America in general.

I love my wife, but there are some things about her I do not like, She is not perfect nor am I and I know there are things about me she does not care for. IOW in some ways we are NOT happy or "proud" of each other.

Are we all proud of America for EVERYTHING that she has done or been involved in? The simple answer is no and slavery is one excellent example

This quote, to me, is the over all opinion he carries of America “I think we can be proud of America because of what we’ve achieved and accomplished in this world,”

The meaning assigned to words here is subjective and looking at the source (Reuters) I'm not surprised at the slant.
