President Bush has signed an executive order requiring contractors and others who do business with the federal government to make sure their employees can legally work in the United States.
Mr. Bush signed the order Friday and the White House announced the order Monday.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez planned an afternoon news conference to discuss the order and other ways the administration has stepped up its crackdown on illegal immigration.
The order says federal departments and agencies must require contractors to use an electronic system to verify that the workers are eligible to work in the U.S.
The order is aimed at cracking down on hiring of illegal immigrants. But people who overstayed visas or came to the country legally but do not have permission to work, such as some students or those awaiting work permits, also could be snagged with the system.
"It is the policy of the executive branch to enforce fully the immigration laws of the United States, including the detection and removal of illegal aliens and the imposition of legal sanctions against employers that hire illegal aliens," in the executive order says.
The order comes as a worker verification bill has essentially stalled in Congress. A Democratic immigration enforcement bill would require employers to check the citizenship and legal status of all their employees.

It’s really amusing, isn’t it?
These hard-core GOP/open border shills sagely advising against hysterics, while posting photos of crying children/admonishing against “whining”,
then trotting out that hoary old phrase: “comprehensive immigration reform” which is much like describing “Squirrel-Tooth Alice” of Dodge City, circa 1870-72, as a “soiled evening dove” when it’s so much easier to just say, well,
Alice was a whore and it’s amnesty.
So, I guess the answer to your question about whether there's a fence (actually) being built is "No".
There is no fence actually being built right now.
How do you feel about all the things Bush has done to encourage and reward illegal aliens for the last seven years?
bitch bitch bich..........
Bitcons are never pleased. Only Christ like perfection will do. Life as a Bitcon is misery
What have you been smoking?
Bush is a whore, too. The only thing we don't yet know is who's paying/paid him for his services.
LOL Amusing and amazing. So much effort put into apologetics for policies that are destroying our country. The willing suspension of honesty to provide cover for bad policies and dereliction of duty is astounding too.
It is an election year, after all.
I'm a little puzzled by your assertion.
Over the past seven months, since the 2006 election, Bush has indeed taken an activist role to enforce the employment laws and secure the border -- making substantial progress on both fronts.
However, the past seven months is the only period during his two terms that the President has taken any action whatsoever against illegal immigration.
The majority of illegal aliens in the US probably arrived here during the Bush administration. And, for seven years, there were almost no prosecutions of the employment laws. Even Clinton had a better record than Bush in this regard.
In addition, was not Bush himself was one of the major cheerleaders for McCain-Kennedy and "comprehensive immigration reform", i.e., amnesty?
Accordingly, I'd submit the Bush administration vs illegal immigration is a paradox.
1. On the one hand, it may well be that he has done more than any other President to stem the problem of illegal immigration. But that's based only on his actions over the past seven months.
2. At the same time, the illegal immigration problem probably worsened more under his tenure than any other President's.
Which is to say: You may be right. But so are his detractors.
Comparing criticism of really bad performance to requiring Christ-like perfection is a pretty lame analogy. There isn’t any truth in it.
“The only thing we don’t yet know is who’s paying/paid him for his services.”
Simple answer: he’s buttering his own bread. The Bush family makes plenty money from their ties with Mexico. Old news, really. Do a web search on ‘Arbusto Energy’ some time.
That is probably true: a weak attempt to provide McCain with some political cover as the election heats up. I was speaking in the context of the others on this thread who have chosen to forget what Bush's stated intentions were, especially during the early portion of his presidency. You appeared to be blaming Bush for not implementing the Secure Fence Act, when it was delivered stillborn by Congress. Sad, but true.
That is also not to say that Bush had other opportunities to implement other things . . . it's just that our frustration with Bush (bordering on hatred by some) does not allow us to change the facts.
People love heroes better than they love truth.
You do understand you just typed that in a reply to someone who doesn’t believe a fence is being built.
Are you saying you think a fence is being built?
If you don't know, what other expertise are you bringing to the table?
It’s not gullibility.
My turn: you think Duncan Hunter is gullible with regard to the fence?
Honest answers to those questions lead to one conclusion; the fence is being stalled as long as possible.
One cannot reason with people who have not reasoned themselves into their position.
