Fewer Voters Identify as Republicans. Democrats Now Have the Advantage in "Swing" States
Pew Research Center ^ | March 20, 2008 | Pew Research Cneter

The balance of party identification in the American electorate now favors the Democratic Party by a decidedly larger margin than in either of the two previous presidential election cycles.

In 5,566 interviews with registered voters conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press during the first two months of 2008, 36% identify themselves as Democrats, and just 27% as Republicans.

The share of voters who call themselves Republicans has declined by six points since 2004, and represents, on an annualized basis, the lowest percentage of self-identified Republican voters in 16 years of polling by the Center.

Conservatives need to face reality -- a "true conservative" as a GOP nominee would get 27% of the votes at most, with about zero chances of winning the election.

McCain IS the GOP nominee and the alternative is B. Hussein Obama. To beat Obama, McCain needs the votes of ALL Republicans, a lot of independent and some Dem votes. If he can't get that, Obama wins, who will surrender the US to the terrorists and turn us into a socialist nation, bankrupt the country with socialist programs. The Perot voters gave us 8 years of Bill Clinton, it's time to AVOID repeating history and giving us 8 years of Obama with a vast Democrat majority in Congress.

This is a few months old, but gives a lot of good current and historical perspective, and a dose of reality.

These polls amaze me. Where do they find the people. In my 50+ years ... I haven’t been asked once. I know, they don’t want my opinion.

“... fewer voters identify as repubs ...”

Hmmmm ..?? Operation Chaos in full bloom. Even Pew Research has been fooled.

I think in actuality .. the repubs are taking in more money than the dems (although the media has been silent about it) and those who crossed over to vote for Hillary will most likely be crossing back in order to vote repub - or if they can’t change back .. will just vote repub anyway.

That should totally screw with all the numbers .. better buy more popcorn.

Most polls are done during the day when voting and working Republicans are at work. The majority of individuals that get polled are liberals that don’t have to work, those that don’t have a job and are unemployed, or just lazy and at home...therefore the majority of individuals that are polled are Democrats. That’s just my opinion.

Pretty much, if Conservatives want to win in Iraq, then Mad Jon McCain is the “guy”, if we want to avoid the largest tax increase in US History, then Mad Jon is the “guy”.

Mad Jon will pick up Conservative Democrats, the so called Blue Dogs, in my area, not even the hardest of hardcore blue dogs are going to vote for Obamao.

That leaves the ball in “our” court.

This garbage is very misleading and only reflects the trend of pissed off Republicans running down to the recorder’s office and registering as an “Independent” after listening to a hard day’s worth of talk radio. Most talk radio guys have also dumped the GOP and now call themselves “independents.” I don’t blame them but I also know they aren’t going to want to see B. Hussein Obama moving into the White House come January.

This bodes badly for The Republic. The American Experiment has entered a new phase.

Did you look at the independents? They lean Dem vs. Rep by a 3/2 margin, i.e. the number of Republican leaning Independents have also decreased.

Several years ago, I was polled by telephone in the evening after work regarding state political races.

Also, for about 2 years we were surveyed regularly regarding TV program preferences. We were asked to do maybe about 3 or 4 tv progrm surveys in that time.

The tv program surveys were done by telephone in the evening.

For the tv program surveys, we were called and told to turn to a cable channel where there wasn’t usually programming to watch pilot shows. Then they called back to ask our opinions of the shows.

McCain is going to win. It may not be by a landslide, but it’ll be by a big enough margin that it won’t be contestable. (Though the ‘Rats WILL still contest it.)

And the MSM will CHOKE while they report the figures rolling in on Election Eve. Tee-Hee!

Hear me now, and quote me later. :)

In words attributed to Scottish historian Alexander Tytler: ‘A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until a majority of voters discover that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury.’

I think this is the phase we are entering — people are voting to “take things away from the rich”, get free healthcare, free food, free TV and so on. They don’t realize that communism failed when they ran out of the “rich”, from whom they can take things. Obama is running on a communist platform, that the MSM euphomistically calling “populist”. Not to mention he is running on a “hate-America” platform.

Well, I really didn’t want to say what I was really thinking. Most scumbags living in this country are spoiled brats who are ready to trade their liberty and freedom for a cradle to grave nanny state. This is reflected by the 67% of the idiots living in this country who tell pollsters that we should stick our heads in the sand and HOPE that the Islamofascists don’t hurt us.

No, Conservatives are not identifying themselves as Republicans. I got polled, and I couldn't identify myself as a Republican, honestly. Nor Dem, but the only other choice was "independant". A "True Conservative" would get all those that do NOT identify themselves as Republicans, as well as the 27% who do. In addition, a "true Conservative" would pick up swinging, uncommitted voters, and would win in a walk.

Well said. You are absolutely right. The conservatives who hopefully will turn out to vote for McCain, vs staying home of voting third party WILL be the ones who make the difference. If they do stay home or vote third party, those actions may result in the destruction of the US as we know it, by Obama and the far left. We can only hope that true conservatives will put the welfare of the country above their hurt egos.

How many McCain points do you earn for posting this worthless trash?

I no longer say I am a republican, because I am not. I’m a conservative.

“conservatives need to face reality “

Who the hell do you socialist in the republican party think you are to say something like this?

ESAE- McCain and his socialist scumbag pals can go eat..........

I think you socialist need to wise up and quit stealing or money via taxes.

I think you’re right that McCain will win - unless he totally blows it. There are enough counts against Obama - his race, his principles, and his associates - that when Americans realize all that, he cannot win.

But I don’t know if I can bring myself to vote for McCain after everything he has done to damage the Conservative cause.

See the Independemts — 15% lean Dem, 10% lean Republican.

OK — so if a “true conservative” would run, he/she would get 10% of the votes. Is that better?
