(CBS) At four weeks old, Macie McCartney has already had two birthdays.
That's remarkable, considering there was a time her parents feared she'd never see even one, CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella reports.
Four months into Keri McCartney's pregnancy, doctors spotted a tumor growing on the baby's tailbone - a rare and, in Macie's case, fatal condition striking one in 35,000 babies.
"At that point we didn't know - we didn't know what was going to happen," Keri said. "We just felt all alone, who will take us, who will help us through this."
The McCartneys found Texas Children's Fetal Center on the Internet - one of only a handful of hospitals in the world performing prenatal surgery.

I'm not sure the writer knows what "fatal" means. Great story though.

The tumor was stealing blood from Macie, weakening her heart. This is probably what the writer meant
Yes, fatal. It wasn’t a cancerous tumor—fortunately for this girl’s future—but it would have killed her before a natural or inducted birth would have been possible.
The tumor was evidently sucking up most of the nourishment meant for the baby’s growth. From the sound of it, I imagine it must have been almost as big as the baby when it was removed.
I understand it *would have* killed her, in which case it *would have* been fatal. As it happened, it fortunately was not fatal due to the great work of the doctors. There's a big difference between "potentially fatal" and "fatal" which seems to be lost on the writer of this piece, and on you as well.
Again, this is a great story, and it's wonderful that the child was saved. I'm just nitpicking the poor writing, and mourning the continuing loss of the English language.
