Four months into Keri McCartney's pregnancy, doctors spotted a tumor growing on the baby's tailbone - a rare and, in Macie's case, fatal condition striking one in 35,000 babies.

I'm not sure the writer knows what "fatal" means. Great story though.

Yes, fatal. It wasn’t a cancerous tumor—fortunately for this girl’s future—but it would have killed her before a natural or inducted birth would have been possible.

The tumor was evidently sucking up most of the nourishment meant for the baby’s growth. From the sound of it, I imagine it must have been almost as big as the baby when it was removed.
