And personally, I don’t take my country as a communist one, but half socialistic and half capitalistic, even though it’s dominated by communist party only.

That is exactly my understanding, a robber baron style capitalist economy with a communist government.

This should be impossible, but the Chinese are a very clever people!

I don't know of any Trabi worshipers, but because so many were destroyed the instant a West German replacement became available, they are quite rare and therefore something of a collector's item.

The self-burning event occured in Tian’an Men Square was not the thing I was referring to. That was a demonstration against Communist Party not allowing them to be Falun Gongers. Just as what you said, none of them had done the same thing again in the US during these years. But let’s think about it. They are a group of people who are anti-communist. What can they obtain if they burn themselves in the US? If they want to draw the focus of the world media, they’d better do it inside China, I guess.

It’s true that people have the right to believe an imperfect religion(not for communists), but it doesn’t give them right to harm themselves or even others. Take Christianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, and Catholicism as an example, they are the five biggest religions in China. I think they are much more popular than Falun Gong, right? If the communists are afraid of the prosperity of some religion, they should be more scared to have over 100 million Chinese religious members, most of whom are after those five religions, than some Falun Gongers. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I knew some Falun Gongers were sentenced to jail in those years. But they were forced to donate their organs? I don’t think so. Where did you get that information?

It’s no wonder that we’re not thinking in the same wave pattern, ‘cause we were brought up in different cultures. Anyway, I would be glad if someone from a different culture can show me how to think.

By the way, I prefer to be called “Miss”, but not “Dude”. Thanks.

Thank you for clarification. I now know what Fuwa toys are, but I still don’t know what is periapt.

Regarding “strange” religious beliefs, here in the US we have a group called Christian Scientists (you can Google that) among others, who believe that prayer can heal the sick. They have very clear restrictions on what Western medicine can be used to heal them and their children. There have been big court cases when they have refused to use generally accepted medical practice to help their sick children. There is a lot of disagreement over this kind of thing.

Actually, I’m not sure what kind of website FR is. The only thing I know is that, we received many many prayers after the quake, so I came over to say “thanks” to all those kind people. If you could read Chinese, I suggest Tianya website. I bet you would be surprisingly shocked about all those complaints toward the government. It’s known that most posters there are cynical and rageful. Even though some extreme provokable threads would be deleted soon after, complaints never suspend. About myself, you may check out my former posts to see whether I’m 100% contented with the government, if you like.

Ah, here comes my ‘favorite’ part, Tibet. But I’ll try to clarify something that might mislead you.

First, Tibet has been a part of China since 1270s. Many foreigners are claiming that “China invaded Tibet” in the midst of 20th century. But they seldom talk about the history of Tibet and how Tibet became a British colony before that “invasion”, which we call “liberation” in China.

Second, communists are indeed leading them to a much better life after the liberation. Actually, Tibet was a serf society before that. 95% of the population were serfs or slaves who have no right or property, while the rest are Lama and aristocrats who own everything in contrast. You may search for documentary videos on YouTube about that and you’ll see how miserable Tibetans’ life was at that time. Dalai Lama once said that Chinese government was persecuting Tibetans right now. Well, compared with the former situations in Tibet, I think Dalai Lama and his colleagues were the only persecutors.

Third, Chinese are not trying to violate their religions and cultures, or something like that. Well, during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which turned out to be a catastrophe in our recent history, most of the cultures and religions are more or less damaged, including Confucianism, and so are Tibetan cultures and temples. That should be the only period of time when Tibetan cultures and religious beliefs were damaged. After that, China had made great compensations on reconstructions. So Tibetans regained their rights for free beliefs, and many religious institutions were repaired or newly founded. The government had offered about two hundred millions yuan to help them fulfill their beliefs in ten years since 1980. By now, over 1400 religionary places have been repaired or founded, which has more or less met Buddhists’ need. Until now, their traditional customs and holidays are still well preserved.

Fourth, Dalai Lama also said before that Chinese government murdered some 1.2 million Tibetans in 1959. Well, the total population in Tibet which was reported to the central government in 1950s was 1.14 million. According to what Dalai Lama had told the world about the 1.2 million deathtoll, Tibetans should have become extinct by now. However, the fact is there are about 2.8 million people in Tibet at the moment, with Tibetans and other minorities making up of about 95% of the population.

Fifth, about the 3.14 event. Wether it’s a “repression on a peaceful demonstration” or merely a “riot that right broke out before the Olympics”, I think most of you can figure out the truth now, after so many Chinese demonstrations both home and abroad against the distortions and calumniations of western media.

So much about that. If you have any quetions or any different opinions, just let me know.

Hi Phoebe. I started the original quake thread and just wanted to take this opportunity to say that I'm still thinking about you all over there and the horrors that many are going thru. Take care.

Periapt, humm, did I use a wrong word? Maybe amulet or protective talisman are better. Anyway, it’s a kind of decoration thing you could beg in a temple. It’s believed by many Chinese that it can protect you from dangers or bad lucks. Usually, there should be words like “Safety” in Chinese on the front or both sides of it.

Oops, Christian Scientists are pretty much like Falun Gongers when dealing with diseases. One distinct difference is that at least Christian Scientists are using some medicines for treatments, while some really sincere Falun Gongers are not. Well, I recall one Chinese saying “Every family cooking pot has a black spot”, which you might prefer to interpret into “Many families have skeletons in the closet”... - -’

Then what have you seen actually? Or maybe the question should be “what have you heard about”?

According to your explanation, the falungongers seem to be quite rational. They know exactly what should be done in special circumstances. And do you still think they are the madness men who enjoying hurting themselves? And what is the point to gain US medias sympathy if their goand als are hurting themselves eventually?

You may have little knowledge about China’s religion constrainings. The Catholics still can’t establish connection with Vatican. When Communists set up its reign in China. Almost 10% of protestants were executed, not to mention the numberless Catholics who refused to admit the CCP’s leadership in their churches and the denouncing of Jesus.

The only reason why they survive in China is they keep playing dumb and praying silently. I think Chinese government should appreciate Christians’ tolerance , as well as the Tibetan’s.

Such events as "The Great Leap Forward" or the Collectivization Famine in the Soviet Union in the early 30's to name just two.

Hi, I remember you and your name, which is still a puzzle to me... I’d like to thank you, too, not only for your concerns about my people, but also for this opportunity you have created for me to communicate with you guys. Even though we may not agree with each other at times, the conversation itself would be an inspiring thing for me. ^_^

It is funny that a rumor identifies the 5 five Fuwa as 5 omens for great disasters or “wrath from heaven” that happened in China.

One is for train crash happened in Shandong Province, One is for Tibetan rebellion, one is for Sichuan Earthquake, one is for olympic torch relays. The final one is not happened yet, and is generally believed to be a huge flood.

Can you give me an example of a communist government that wasn’t an economic and human rights disaster for the people that lived under it?

Those Falun Gongers in the US are just a portion of the primal ones. I can’t say they are more educated and rational than the rest, but at least they have the ability migrating legally or illegally to your country. They can afford their expenses in your country. They know how to run an anti-communist website(or maybe I’m too suspicious, and they are just a few journalists). What about the others? They are rural people, some of who barely know how to read. I don’t know much about the present situations of Falun Gongers in the US. Are they stopping hurting themselves and beginning to accept medical treatments when they are ill?

About those religious constrainings, executions took place after new China was founded? I didn’t know about that part. What about now? I thought Christianism was respectable here. There are churches in most cities. How could they pray silently? I noticed last time that one guy reminded us Chinese to be careful, ‘cause it’s a Christian website. I didn’t care then. And I’m confused now.

The Robber Barons, among other things, built virtually the entire railroad infrastructure in the US.

They did cause a lot of problems, ran competitors out of business with what we would regard as unfair business practices, seized private land (frequently under color of authority) and often ran roughshod over their fellow Americans.

OTOH, the kept a goodly portion of the economy running, set the stage for America’s expansion, and provided countless jobs.

I suspect occasional robber baron stages are essential for avoiding stagnation and promoting growth.

The other good thing about robber barons? Unlike deeply entrenched bureaucracies, they eventually have the good grace to die and leave what they built for the rest of us!

I’ve also noticed that many native speakers of oriental languages have trouble handling single and plural nouns in English.

I assume this is because in their native tongues the nouns don’t change from singular to plural, that it’s obvious from the rest of the sentence that one is talking about three fish as plural, vs one fish as singular.

(Maybe I should have used an example where the English singular and plural are different?)
