A Bleak Future

Politics: Imagine an America where the government decides what profits are acceptable. Imagine our country with the oil industry nationalized. Impossible? Not with Democrats in control of Washington.

One California Democrat, saying out loud what many on her side of the aisle have been thinking for some time, has threatened to seize the oil industry.

"This liberal will be all about socializing, uh, uh . . . would be about . . . basically taking over and the government running all of your companies," Rep. Maxine Waters told oil executives on May 22 during yet another show-trial congressional hearing.

Socializing, nationalizing — the term doesn't matter. But the result is the same. Oil industry takeovers are disastrous. Does Waters really want the U.S. to go the way of Venezuela, Iran, Bolivia or Mexico? Those nations that have nationalized their domestic oil operations and have suffered economically because of it.

And as wretched as their situations are now, their economic prospects are even poorer as long as their corrupt governments continue to control their oil industries.

Meanwhile, Waters' colleague from Pennsylvania's 11th district, Rep. Paul Kanjorski, is proposing a federal "Reasonable Profits Board." Its members would be charged with determining when oil and gas companies' "profits are in excess."

Forget that it's impossible to objectively define what's "excessive." When the energy companies' profits increase, so will their federal taxes.

Kind of weak. No, decidedly weak. Not alarming at all.

It reads like something right out of Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand was a good novelist but I didn’t know she was a prophetess.

They already have of sorts; just substitute the word ‘income’ for ‘profits’.

Put up with it for four years.

Eight at the worst.

Because by that time, the country will vote the goofs out.

“Imagine an America where”...were public schools teach basic economics.

unkus,
I’m not certain there is a John Galt waiting out there, so I suspect we will all have to due our part to deal with the “looters”.

The self proclamed Liberal Fascist Maxine Waters should be told that conservation will not pump one drop of oil from the ground. The oil companies will have to do it for a profit. Maybe the oil companies can charge the government to explore for oil for a tidy profit in the future.

Oh heck, I want Exxon Mobil to raise prices ever skyward, McCain to bomb Iran and Russia, and we pay $15 a gallon for gas, while my wages freeze. Those Marxists in Venezuela are paying 14 cents a gallon.

We’ll do it little by little. It will catch on, I hope.

Whenever Maxine Waters speaks, something is subtracted from the sum total of human knowledge.

More likely would be a forced sale of of key industries to the government as was done in Britain after WW-II. Margaret Thatcher succeeded in getting these businesses back into private hands.

Or, as Stalin called it, "the Commanding Heights".

I believe, however, that the seizure has already taken place. How else can you describe the fact that large corporations seem more concerned about "multiculturalism" then profits?

"Water"

People can pick on that idiot Waters (justifiably), but my Harvard-educated congressman, Ron Kind, does not say much different. When quizzed by our local lib rag about energy options, Kind went on a diatribe about evil oil companies and their obscene profits. He actually said our options are limited as far as energy extraction. Nowhere in the interview did he or his interviewer mention the large reserves of gas and oil that our country has. Sometimes stupidity (or deceit) comes with a Harvard diploma.
