WASHINGTON (AP) - Barack Obama is considering a visit to Iraq this summer, his first to the war zone since becoming a presidential candidate. Obama revealed his plans to The New York Times. He has been under criticism from Republican rival John McCain for failing to visit Iraq since 2006. Obama also declined McCain's invitation for a joint trip.
"I just don't want to be involved in a political stunt," Obama said, according to a report on the newspaper's Web site Wednesday.
"I think that if I'm going to Iraq, then I'm there to talk to troops and talk to commanders," he said in the interview. "I'm not there to try to score political points or perform. The work they're doing there is too important."
Obama's campaign has been considering an overseas trip since last year to beef up his foreign policy credentials, but the extended fight for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Rodham Clinton has delayed those plans.

Is the 56th state Elbonia?
close
not since the surge
Elbonia is to rooted in reality for Obama.
“Obama’s campaign has been considering an overseas trip since last year to beef up his foreign policy credentials, but the extended fight for the Democratic nomination with Hillary Rodham Clinton has delayed those plans.”
Sure you have, sure...but to what country, Iran?
I can just see it now. Obambi comes back from Iraq and tells the whole world how his plane made a corkscrew landing to avoid anti-aircraft flak then, once on the tarmac, the plane came under sniper fire.
Where have I heard that before?
He really ought to go with McCain, the only guy who could prevent the tiniest National Guard PFC who's in country between her college semesters from kicking his sorry butt up between his floppy ears.
I can’t think of anything more demoralizing.
Says the fool who used taxpayer dollars to finance his personal trip to Africa.
That entire story is one big contradiction.
Senators go over to war zones together all the time. Traveling in a bipartisan senate group with McCain would NOT be political, it would be doing the job of a Senator.
On the other hand, not going there in 2 years, and then going by yourself to “brush up your foreign policy credentials” is most certainly a political ploy, and using the troops for political gain.
And of course, only a Democrat would think that visiting the troops in a war zone “burnishes” your foreign policy credentials. In the real world, DOING something is what gives you credibility.
“I’m not there to try to score political points or perform. The work they’re doing there is too important.”
Oh if only the troops there could make and hold up a big banner “Our work is important sez Obama”

A several hour or several day trip will beef up his foreign policy credentials? Foreign policy education by tourism ain’t gonna cut it Obama.
Hillary has her fingers crossed.
Why stop now???
Maybe he can go to Mecca while he’s in the Middle East. They don’t permit muslims to enter and keep their heads. Barry should be just fine; his daddy was a muslim which means they see him as one too. He can even sing the Islamic call to prayer; that ought to “throw them off” if they suspect he isn’t a muslim.
Yeah, Obama is famous for his Al Jolson impersonation. Didn't you know?
"Nanny, my dear old nanny state!"
I knew Obama wouldn’t go to Iraq with McCain. The REAL reason he won’t is because he wants to be able to come back and claim to have seen things (bad things of course) that McCain didn’t see. He cannot possibly report on progress or positives; that would undercut his whole platform of undercutting the mission of our troops...and he doesn’t want McCain as a witness to what he actually saw versus what he is “reporting.”
