~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona

060304-F-2295B-206

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base adjacent to Tucson, Arizona. The installation is primarily an Air Combat Command (ACC) base with the 355th Fighter Wing (355 FW) as the host activity. The base is also home to Headquarters, 12th Air Force (12 AF) and the Air Force Material Command's (AFMC) 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (309 AMARG), previously known as the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC).

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is named in honor of Lieutenants Samuel H. Davis and Oscar Monthan, two Tucsonans and World War I era pilots who died in separate military aircraft accidents.

The War Department began construction of the military air base in 1940. The first assigned units were the 1st Bomb Wing, 41st Bomb Group, and 31st Air Base Group, making D-M Air Base the primary training location for the B-24 Liberator, B-29 Superfortress and B-50 Superfortress. D-M's 43rd Air Refueling Squadron had the honor of being one of the first two air refueling squadrons in the Air Force, flying the KB-29M.

Davis-Monthan AFB entered the "Jet Age" in 1953 when the 43rd and 303rd Bomb Wings converted to B-47 Stratojet bombers and T-33 jet trainers. In preparation, the Air Force built a 200' x 11,500' runway. By March 1953, the first of dozens of jet aircraft were delivered to D-M. These aircraft filled the Tucson skies through 1970.

The 355th Fighter Wing is the host unit at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, however, other units also call D-M home. Twelfth Air Force, the 563rd Rescue Group and The Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) are all based out of D-M.

After the execution of Operation Enduring Freedom, eight A-10s from the 355th Wing were called to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan to fly close air support missions supporting multinational ground forces.

In September 2002, the 48th, 55th, and the 79th Rescue Squadrons (RQS) transferred under control of the 355th Wing, equipped with HC-130 aircraft and HH-60 helicopters. At the same time, the 41st and 43 Electronic Combat Squadrons were realigned under the control of the 55th Electronic Combat Group (55 ECG).

While personnel and aircraft remained on Davis-Monthan AFB operational control of the 55 ECG was assumed by the 55th Wing at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Another major wing realignment occurred on 1 October 2003 with the activation of the 563 Rescue Group on Davis-Monthan AFB. Control of the 48th, 55th, and 79th Rescue Squadrons (RQS) was passed to the new group with the 23rd Wing assuming operational command of the unit.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you
The love of God enfold you
The power of God protect you
The presence of God watch over you
Wherever you are, God is,
And all is well.
Amen.

BLESS THIS HOUSE
 Bless this house O Lord we pray; Make it safe by night and day;
Bless these walls so firm and stout, Keeping want and trouble out:
Bless the roof and chimneys tall, Let thy peace lie over all;
Bless this door, that it may prove ever open to joy and love.
Bless these windows shining bright, Letting in God's heav'nly light;
Bless the hearth a'blazing there, with smoke ascending like a prayer;
Bless the folk who dwell within, keep them pure and free from sin;
Bless us all that we may be Fit O Lord to dwell with thee;
Bless us all that one day we May dwell O Lord with thee.

D-M, pretty much home port for U-2s back in those days.

From txradioguy..........

Before I forget...before today is over...I want to thank my friends here at CC for their support for the military...not just for me...not just on an individual level...but what you do for all of us..you guys help me in some small part to keep my faith in the goodness of man.

My faith in people gets tested at times...but then something happens like what happened on Thursday...a teen aged kid...probably about the age of my oldest boy...doesn’t know me from Adam...stops me while we’re doing flags in...and thanks me...says we’re his heroes.

Wow

‘’Tell them of us and say, For their tomorrows, We gave our today.”

God bless all of you on this Memorial Day.

When I saw the “flags in” on the Pentagon Channel, I suspected it might be The Old Guard. Thanks to all of you for being there for all us.

Thank God and his parents for teaching that young man that you ARE, and SHOULD BE, his heroes!!

Did ya have a nice day today?

Pretty good.

I missed a flyover by a few seconds.
I heard them from my kitchen, but by the time I got outside they were long gone.
My wife said, "Told you there's always a flyover on Memorial Day."

There's usually something at Coney Island on the Fourth of July around noontime. But this was just after 6:30. My guess is that they were heading toward Yankee or Shea Stadium.
