Former Congressman plans to take the White House as Libertarian candidate
Denver - The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr as its candidate for president for the 2008 election.
"I'm sure will we emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party," Barr stated in his victory speech shortly after being selected as the Party's nominee. "I want everybody to remember that we only have 163 days to win this election. We cannot waste one single day."
More than 650 Libertarian delegates met in Denver from May 22 till the 26 for the 2008 Libertarian National Convention. After six rounds of voting Sunday afternoon, Barr was selected as the Party's presidential nominee.
"We're proud to present to the American voters Bob Barr as our presidential nominee," says Libertarian Party spokesperson Andrew Davis. "While Republicans and Democrats will fight for their own power in November, Libertarians will fight for Americans. Bob Barr is one of the strongest candidates in the Party's 37-year history, and we look for him to have an enormous impact in the 2008 race. Republicans and Democrats have good reason to fear a candidate like Barr, who refuses to accept the 'business-as-usual' attitude of the current political establishment. Americans want and need another choice, and that choice is Bob Barr."
The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.LP.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom.

“And doesnt the ACLU, for which Barr consults, already have enough candidates in the race?” —Michelle Malkin
No, he hired on with the ACLU to promote their agendas regarding “privacy, surveillance and national security issues.” He’s another “Ron Paul” style nutter who puts the terrorists first and national security last.
Now wait a second. I thought Libertarians only get .00001% of the vote anyway, according to the hoity-toity conservatives who rip on them. So how are they helping Democrats win?
How is that different from McCain's stand on Gitmo? He opposes torture and Gitmo also.
Seriously, you guys bashing Barr are in total denial. John McCain, the GOP nominee, completely sucks, and you have to take your frustrations out on Barr.
ANY vote NOT for McCain, is a vote for the Democrat. I don’t like it, because McCain wasn’t my guy, but flawed as he is, he’s far and away better than either of the Democrat candidates.
Ross Perot tapped into the anger of the twisted knickers bunch. He didn’t offer ONE solution to any of the problems about which he complained, he simply whined, bitched and moaned. It didn’t matter how terrible the Bush campaign was, he would have been preferable to X42, who did nothing but encourage Islamic extremism from the time he took office, because they looked at his foreign policy and found nothing to give them pause.
Obama math? They range from .1 to 1 percent.
As Americans we should be voting for the best candidate. Voting for only who we think can win is what got us here. Don't presume to tell people how they should vote. It's un-American.I could not have said it better myself. We've had two presidents in a row who have trashed the Constitution, and it's our duty as Americans to educate our family, friends and neighbors as to the alternatives. I guarantee they will all get an earful from me -- particularly about Barr and Baldwin, not to mention John "Feingold" McCain's disdain for the Constitution and incestuous relationship with the Charlie "Fourth Branch of Republicrat Government" Black, one of the most corrosive and corrupt manipulators of the Federal government alive today.
That "bizarre place" is called "reality". Please visit it sometime. I know it is more fun to vote one's conscience, and watch as 100,000 others join you in your act of honorable futility. However, at the end of the day, a conservative voting for Bob Barr is exactly what the Obama Campaign wants.
In short, Bob Barr is the Democrats' "Operation Chaos".
I didn’t vote for Ross Perot. Bush lost because he tried hard to lose. He and his son have destroyed the Republican Party. It wouldn’t greatly surprise me if the Republicans go the way of the Federalists and Whigs.

So you won't be voting for Juan McCainendez then either?
Votes are EARNED. The LP pulls as many votes from the Left side of the Spectrum as it does the Right. Only fear and Party Politics keeps the LP from doing to both Big Two Parties what the Republicans originally did to the Whigs.
A lot of us ain't playing that game anymore. The GOP's slide to the Left has GOT to stop. No matter how painful hitting that wall will be.
They are not running as Republicans because liberals are controlling the GOP. They gotta find somewhere to go.
Uh, isn’t that going to make the matter worse, not better?
Agreed. McCain nearly jumped parties twice in ‘01 and ‘04. He is for amnesty, which will be the death of the GOP. Once there are 12 million new Democrat voters, the party is on...
...expect taxes for entitlements to skyrocket...not that anybody in the media is talking about this.
...um...no. By voting for Barr and electing Obama, we will have a second Carter administration...given four years of Carter/Obama socialism the GOP may well return to its conservative roots.
You won’t get a conservative by voting for McCain...you will get a Rockefeller.
Okay, fine. We can argue that any tax is unfair. But I'm still waiting for someone to explain why the Fair Tax is LESS FAIR than the income tax, especially with respect to the associated black markets.
Where to start?
ACLU: Even a stopped clock is right twice a day (which, given the fiscal mess we’re in, is probably a better record than the current congress dominated by members of the TWO national parties).
Legalized drugs: Got a newsflash for you; the only folks for whom this stuff is still illegal are those who are not 6 figure lawyers, stock traders, members of congressional staff, etc.) You get the idea.
Legalized prostitution: See above. Same deal. Oh yeah, add MEMBERS of Congress. Can you guess why call girls and “escort” services are such money makers in DC?
Legalized gay marriage: I don’t like it either but so long as they leave me and mine alone and stay out of my face with their “lifestyle” crap (which they’re already shoving at us ANYWAY), I say live and let live.
Elimination of the INS: Bush already did that, de facto. Border protection? WHAT BORDER PROTECTION?
Look, if the Dems and the Rinos are going to continue to trash this country — obviously with your help — we might as well light up, get laid and enjoy it.
The there’s THIS:
* “The common and continual mischief of the spirit of Party is sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.” George Washington
I shall follow Washington’s wise counsel and do my part to discourage and restrain it by voting for Mr. Barr.
No, they haven't. Even as Presidents they only had limited power. Most folks are mad at the Republican Party in recent years for Congress's actions with out of control spending, and allowing the Democrats to roll over them. Their approval rating is even lower than the President's.
