CLEVELAND (AP) - The Memorial Day guest list at Sen. John McCain's Arizona home runs to at least three Republicans mentioned as vice presidential running mates, but a top aide said Wednesday that vetting possible veeps is not on the agenda.

"It's purely social," said Mark Salter, a senior adviser to McCain.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney were all invited to a Memorial Day gathering at the senator's home in Sedona, Ariz. Romney ran for the Republican presidential nomination in last winter's primaries, but dropped out months ago and has endorsed McCain.

Ten couples in all were invited. McCain often hosts friends and political acquaintances at his compound.

McCain said more than a month ago that he was in the "embryonic stages" of selecting a running mate for the fall campaign, but neither he nor aides have disclosed additional information in the weeks since.

I guess Huckabee’s joking about an attempted assassination on Sen. Obama did not help his chances of being the V.P.

That pretty much sank his chances, I’ll bet.

It won’t be Lieberman. He’ll get a plum cabinet post though, I’ll bet.

I am right behind you.

Isn’t Crist “light in the loafers”

I think I saw one or two of the fine Florida FReepers post that.

What does a 30-year-old governor from Louisiana have in common with a 70-year-old Washingtonian?

"Lieberdood"

I think that would be funny as hell. I'd like to see him pick a Dick Cheney type - one who is not looking to succeed to the presidency. I can't imagine that if McCain wins, he will get a second term. Nor do I think any Republican will win next time around. But then, I'm not taking into consideration the Democrats ability to screw things up.

They both try to sound conservative to get elected, but don’t act it once elected?

He could resurrect Ronald Reagan himself and I still wouldn’t vote for McCain.

He better pick well. I’m not voting for McCain, and I don’t doubt other people only support McCain by a razor-thin margin. On the other hand, I’ll consider voting for his running mate if he picks a strong, consistent conservative. Crist, Mitt, and Lieberman are not it.

It's way too early for Bobby Jindal. Granted, the future of the Republican party is riding on Mr. Jindal, but he needs to prove himself as a Governor first.

Personally, I would love to see Rick Santorum as VP, but I know I am dreaming.

"FWIW "

That wouldn't be very much. Jindal might be a great candidate in another 4 to 8 years, Crist is an unknown outside Florida, and that only leaves Romney as the logical choice. But we are talking about a maverick, aren't we? McCain might decide to go with Hillary Clinton.

Don’t place your hopes in Jindal carrying the GOP to conservatism. Ask the Louisiana freepers.

There is nothing short of repudiating his own global warming, amnesty, and gun control history that would make me vote for him.

In a perfect world I would have hoped to find Rick Santorum invited to that BBQ...but (heavy sigh) no. And yes I do know that McCainiac had one of his famous 'meltdowns' in the Senate cloak room (do they really have cloaks there?) aimed at the former Jr. Senator from PA...but still...Rick would greatly improve the ticket.

I just wanted to post that...
