Due to MrsDrumbo's Birthday, it's another:
DRIVE-BY
Jack Bruce was born May 14, 1943, in Lanarkshire, near Glasgow, Scotland. He grew up listening to jazz and took up bass and cello as a teen. After three months at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, he left, disgusted with the politics of music school. After traveling around Europe for a while, he settled into the early British blues scene in 1962 in London, where he eventually met drummer Ginger Baker. He played with British blues pioneers Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and The Graham Bond Organization before leaving in 1965 to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, whose guitarist was Eric Clapton. This gave him time to get his chops together and form the bonds and connections that would last throughout his lifetime. With both Manfred Mann and Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Greene, as well as sessions with Marvin Gaye, who he also played with before forming Cream with Ginger Baker & Eric Clapton, Jack learned about the business of making hit songs.
Cream, managed by entrepreneur Robert Stigwood, was one of rock's groundbreaking acts that introduced British Blues to an international audience. They arrived in America in 1967 with The Who on a "Murry The K" tour, splitting $3,000 for five shows a day for ten days. Stigwood quickly secured them headliner bookings and by the end of that first U.S. tour they were earning $68,000 per performance. Although short-lived, the band introduced and defined both "power trio" and "super-group", redefining the rock music scene and setting a standard in both quality and output that few acts have ever rivaled but many emulate to this day. With lyricist Pete Brown and producer Felix Pappalardi, Jack penned some of rock music's most recognizable hooks, as well as, many lovely melodies, richly layered with the influence of his classical training. Cream released a string of albums that spawned hit songs written by Bruce that helped define rock music in the late sixties.
An accomplished bassist, guitarist, pianist, cellist and harmonica player, it was Jack's powerful, soaring vocals and genius at composition that established him as a founding father of the British Blues. Since Cream, Jack has played with music legends like Frank Zappa, Billy Cobham, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher. Mick Taylor, Tony Williams' Lifetime, Vernon Reid, Leslie West, Jeff Beck, Ringo Starr's All-stars, Robin Trower, Todd Rundgren, Alan Parsons, Rod Stewart, Mark Farner and Christopher Cross just to name a few.
