Renton (Washington State),May 15 Indian Navy will soon have an edge in the Indian Ocean once it inks $2.2 billion deal for eight maritime patrol planes from Boeing. The agreement is expected to be signed soon.

The Boeing P-8i Poseidons long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR)patrol aircraft will enable the Indian Navy to operate a platform almost simultaneously with the USNavy.

Richard Buck,Boeing's international programme manager for P8,said that India would be able to leverage on the substantial investment made in the P8 by the US Navy.

A lot of issues relating to the P-8i for the Indian Navy are still in the process of being sorted out, said Buck.

So far,the company officials claim that $4 billion had already been spent on the development of the aircraft. The uniqueness of the programme is that it is not being negotiated under the US foreign military sales (FMS)programme but as adirectcommercial agreement between Boeing and the Indian Navy.

Responding to a question, Buck said,"Under the request for proposal (RFP)received, the first aircraft has to be delivered within 48 months of the contract being signed and the remaining within an eight-year time frame."

Buck said,"We are offering next generation technology that will keep the plane in service till 2050at the least.Beit in an anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance or reconnaissance roles, the P8I combines superior performance and proven reliability againstanyotheraircraftflying today."

The P-8i,based on the Boeing-737 commercial airliner, was competing with the European Aeronautic Defence and Space (EADS)'s A-319 maritime patrol aircraft and other contenders in meeting 'qualitative requirements'in the technical trials held by the Navy. The P-8i,a customised version for the Indian Navy,is based on the hugely successful Boeing-737 commercial airliner. The navy had,in November 2006,expressed an interest in the aircraft as a replacement for its existing fleet of Il-38 aircraft.

The P-8A Poseidon is a long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft. It possesses an advanced mission system for maximum interoperability in battle space. Capable of broad-area, maritime, and littoral operations, the P-8A is expected to influence how the U.S. Navy's maritime patrol and reconnaissance forces train, operate, and deploy.

Torpedoes, Harpoon missiles, sonar buoys, advanced radar and ASW detection capabilities. Oh yes, this will be a fine aircraft and worthy successor to the P-3s.

Yes. The P-3 Orion has been a magnificent performer, and we’ve certainly gotten a lot of mileage out of that airframe. It’s too bad for Lockheed, I suppose, that the Electra got such a bad rap so early. It obviously was a good design once the early flaws were fixed.

The 737 as a replacement was a great decision. Kinda takes it to a whole new level. And it’s hard to argue with the workhorse 737. It’s about as proven an airframe as is in the air.

This acquisition must be seen in the light of recent news regarding chinese submarine actitivy. Pakistan’s buildup of Subs will also be countered effectively by this purchase. All in all a sign that Indian and US leadership see eye to eye on many of these issues.

I start to see India more and more like France just before WW-II. The Chinese are going more and more Fascist. The Japanese start to look more and more like the Brits at the time and Taiwan would be Sudetan Deutschland.

One attribute the P-3 had that the Boeing P-8i cant match was its lower and slower loiter airspeeds

Extrapolating your analogy further. The first Sino-Indian war is similar to the earlier Franco-Prussian war.

I look forward to the subsequent humiliating ass kicking that the Indians are about to receive.

India is not aggressor here. You guys are. You are occupying our land as we speak.

I can understand a Chinese person in China succumbing to propaganda from commie machinery. But why is it that even overseas Chinese also seem to be brainwashed with the same propaganda. Take for instance the Tibet issue. Thousands of Chinese in US have supported the Chinese atrocities despite having access to free media from multiple sources that reported how Chinese govt. has suppressed and screwed the Tibetean people. People living in China might have no access to such information and are constantly bombarded with propaganada. But why are overseas Chinese behaving like this? I will never hesitate to demonstrate against my govt. if it indulges in such things. The more I look at this, the more it feels like Chinese are themselves happy being under commie unlike what people in west think - that Chinese people hate communism. Maybe its not worth ‘liberating’ the Chinese from the scourge of communism. Maybe they just like to be under a fascist rule with no human rights or freedoms.

Otherwise what explains the behavior of overseas Chinese regarding the Olympic rally and Tibet. How can they still believe the propaganda of Chinese govt. despite living in open societies outside and having access to free media?

Your land? Do you happen to own the land? Do you physically live there? What is your historical connection? As far as I can tell, the only thing that links India to the land that China allegedly occupies is the fact that some long dead Englishmen happened to draw a line on a map a hundred years ago and the Indians suddenly think that everything up to it(and parts beyond since the Englishmen made a mistake and didn’t claim enough!) is now magically theirs.

As to protesting, I’m certain plenty of Indians do, you just won’t find any here. Just try raising human rights issue regarding Kashmir, Naxals, Nagas, Christians, Caste violence, Women, etc at FR. You won’t find anything but selective amnesia or apologia from the India brigade.

As for your curious question, the simple answer is that people have different priorities. Catering to the demands of some useless monks or narcissistic hippy agitators just happens to be very low on the list.

There’s very little difference between the Chinese and Muslims if you haven’t noticed. They live in ghettos wherever they go, stick to each other, think of their “way of life” as supreme and now are out to “rule the world”. So there...we have 2 global diseases...the Chinese, and Islam.
